The Corpse Bride blu-ray looks gorgeous. The bright colors in the underworld scenes really pop.
This.
I also recommend all of John Ford’s westerns for no other reason than Ford’s breathtaking signature vista shots of the American west. Fabulous.
Ben Hur. Worth it for the chariot race alone. More fabulous.
Bullit. Ditto for the chase sequence. I’d kill to see that on a ‘giant ass flat screen’ again.
Rear Window. Hitchcock’s eyeball-popping set (they dug serious feet into the floor of the studio building to create it) and Grace Kelly’s equally-awesome haute couture for us girls - not to mention Grace herself for you boys. 'nuff said.
Just skimming the thread, but did you get the 5.1 Surround AV receiver that must be paired with it? There’s little point in picking an awesome movie to watch on the awesome TV without the awesome sound along with it.
My vote would be Lord of the Rings. The conclusion of Return of the King is fabulous if you have the booming bass to go with the visuals.
The fight between Kong and the T-Rexes in Peter Jackson’s “King Kong” is seriously worth watching on a big screen.
If you’re into foreign films, I’d recommend Old Boy.
It is a Korean movie that is one of the most twisted movies I’ve ever seen. I’m not saying it’s going to be a pleasant watch, but at the end of the movie, it’ll leave you in dumbfoundead for a lack of better words.
Seconded as to the first Pirates of the Caribbean, the LOTR movies, and The Incredibles.
Limitless, a fantastic technothriller from last year starring Bradley Cooper and Robert de Niro, has some cool altered-mind sfx that look groovy on a big screen.
Adventures in Babysitting. It ain’t for everyone, but one scene in particular really pops on a big screen.
Lots of Woody Allen movies benefit from it, esp. Manhattan and Midnight in Paris. Ditto all of Fellini.
Pan’s Labyrinth and all the Harry Potter movies.
The Fifth Element has long been one of the go-to movies for showing off home theater equipment. It’s a great-looking movie, and a lot of fun, too.
Play Time. Pretty sure it’s on Hulu Plus in their Criterion Collection section. A must for the big screen.
baraka
A couple that haven’t been mentioned yet:
Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy JUST for the Magrathea scene, though I think it can only properly be appreciated on an IMAX screen.
Speed Racer. So much eye candy it’ll give you diabetes.
In the vein of suggestions that probably haven’t yet been made, I recommend Hard Candy. It’s an intense journey for the viewer, as it’s both physically and psychologically intense for the characters. Plus it’s one of my favorite movies. I think the movie would be even more fantastic (and draining) to watch on a big screen.
Requiem for a Dream, another total mindfuck with interesting visual effects.
This. If you have a Blu-ray player (and hopefully it and the TV are both compatible with 1080p/24), I recommend buying this disc for any time you want to show off your TV.
I also recommend buying a setup disc to get your home theatre looking and sounding its best. This is the one I got and it worked great. Takes an hour or so of your time, but it is so worth it.
On first read, I thought you were confessing to having a giant ass…
In that case, the answer would be spandex jeggings!
The first film we watched when we got ours was the documentary Woodstock (1970). I’d recommend that.
How big a screen is it? I can’t believe no one’s mentioned Star Wars.
Looks like he got a 55" Panny. Also, someone mentioned Star Wars in post #11.
