Just lost my job.

Well, my company is going belly-up, so we all found out yesterday at 3pm that it was our last day at work. Stupid new new economy! This sucks more for some of my co-workers – I’d only been there six months, but some people had been there the whole year-and-a-half. Our 26-year-old president cried when he told us! The last round of funding just didn’t come through.

So now I’m out and about in the middle of the day, and it’s weird. I mean, I’ve only been out of college since June, but I’ve gotten accustomed to being busy in the afternoon and stuff. And now I have the fun of looking for a job, along with tons of other former-dot-commers. Wheee!

So if anyone has any leads in Seattle for an English/Theatre BA with plenty of office experience, please let me know. Having contacts works soooo much better than just sending resumes!

Thanks for listening, too.

I’m short on contacts, stargazer, but long on sympathy.

Hang in there, and I’m sure you’ll find another great position.

I don’t have any leads for ya, but I thought someone needs to tag in and say. That definitely sucks, but it’s really cool to see you’ve got a great attitude about it in so far as you’re hitting the ground running and looking instead of being so rocked back on your heels by it that you’re paralyzed.

Criminy! My adopted newbie is outta work. Well, if ya can make yer way to Toledo, I’d be happy to hire ya. I’ll even provide the CAD training.

Stargazer - Tell me about your work experience. If it’s new economy and related to marketing, maybe I can help you out.

That happened to me about a month ago. Try seeing if anyone from your old company knows of a company that’s looking.
The CTO of my previous company knew the president of the company I work for now, so I had another position lined up in about a week. You’re absolutely right that connections count.

well, I graduated from college in June, as I said. I have plenty of admin-type experience. I’m good with computers, have used the general MS products a ton, in addition to a few others. I’ve been the Customer Service department, the admin for accounting, the telecounseling coordinator for my university (calling prospective/incoming students, not selling stuff), and I’ve been the admin/marketing coordinator for a very small research group – I was the only admin person there, so I did everything.

So I don’t really have much marketing experience, but I really learn quickly. Promise.

This may sound greedy, but I need to be making at least $30k/year plus medical/dental/vision – my fiance’s going into theatre, so I’ll have to support both of us when we get married.

Even if it doesn’t work out, thanks for the attempt, THespos! And thanks for the advice, Nerd. I’m definitely keeping those contacts open.

Hi, Stargazer. I’ll be emailing you some possible contacts.

Wellllll, that won’t work. You’ve got your email option shut off. The ball’s in your court.

You can have my job. I want to move out of So. Cal.

I’ve lost a job or two in my lifetime, and being unemployed sucks. I was out of work for a whole freaking year, back in 1991, couldn’t even get hired for a freaking minimum wage retail job. That was the economy in South Bend, IN at the time, though. College grads working fast food jobs, people with graduate degrees could get a clerical job that actually paid more than six dollars an hour!!!

Then got a decent job, was laid off after two months…

Keep pounding the pavement, though. And, this may sound wierd, but talk to people in the street. You never know, you might run into an employee or even an exec who’s on their way to a restaraunt for lunch who works for a company that’s hiring, or who happens to know that another company in the same office building is looking for people.

I actually found a fairly decent job that way, where I worked for over two years.

Hey, stargazer, I moved out to Seattle from Chicago last February and managed to hold down a Web development job for a grand total of 9 months before I was laid off. So much for the new economy. The Stranger said something like 3000 people have been canned from tech jobs in the last few months. I guess we’re not alone.

See you out there at the job fairs!

Thanks, everyone. OrcaChow, you should be able to access my email now. Sorry it took so long – my internet access is very spotty now, since I don’t have a computer at home.

I sent my resume off to a company on Friday, and I really hope I hear back from them. If I don’t get an interview this week, I’m going to go to an employment agency and see what my options are there. I’ll keep you posted!
