Just saw a summer stock presentation of "Murder on the Nile"... when your last live theater outing?

2006? 2007? The Sound Of Music at The Hollywood Bowl, with Shayna and Spiny Norman.

Before that was also at The Hollywood Bowl: My Fair Lady, starring John Lithgow; also with Shayna and Spiny Norman. Really amazing seats for that one, courtesy of Shayna’s boss.

.

“Guys and Dolls,” as discussed here.

I last went a couple of years ago, to a full production of “The Mikado” at Washburn University here in Topeka Kansas. I’ve always adored that musical, and Gilbert and Sullivan in general. My mom went with me.

One thing that got a cheer from the audience was a line in the song “I’ve got a little list”. It’s common to update the lyrics to this songs, perhaps adding in local references. They got a few chuckles with references to people who text in theaters and so on. But we roared and clapped when they made a reference to the Westboro Baptist church, which is located right here in Topeka.

“And those who walk Topeka streets with signs that hate insist;
I’ve got them on my list,
They never will be missed…”

This summer, the Broadway Series that have stopped here have been great. We have seen West Side Story, Young Frankenstein, The Musical and Wicked. The community theater season is about ready to get started again, and we have season tickets to two different groups.

Last Tuesday, Bard on the Beach’s production of As You Like It.

Which, frankly, I thought was a little weak. Is As You Like It generally felt to be one of Shakespeare’s lesser plays?

1979 or 1980

Most recent was the Neil Simon Broadway Bound at Drury Lane.

Chicago has a wonderful assortment of small theatres, there’s lots of great stuff around. We got to several each year. We subscribe to Lifeline, for instance, which did Watership Down and The Moonstone last year, and will be doing Count of Monte Cristo in September/October.

TheoUbique does amazing, amazing musicals in a small area (50 person audience).

In short, there’s lots and lots of great stuff, at reasonable prices.

Good lord, is James O’Neill *still *touring in that?

I’d guess it was about a year and a half ago, when a friend starred in a one-woman show that was written by a local playwright. It was a little experimental, but pretty good.

If you count community theatre productions that I appeared in, then it was “You Can’t Take it With You,” last March.

Ha ha. This is brand new adaptation, by the guy who did MARK OF ZORRO about three years ago (a fantastic production, they were literally swinging on the chandeliers.)

This afternoon - but I was onstage, not in the audience.

On Friday I took my stepdad (who was a Shakespearean actor in his younger days) and my mom to a production of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest”. The performers were a local group called the “Short Shakespeareans”. All kids! The group was founded 33 years ago.

My roommate works for two theatre companies at school, one of which she co-founded, and my other roommate works in a theatre in Montreal, plus I act and play in pit orchestras occasionally. I wind up taking in a lot of theatre, although mostly performed by university students.

In June we saw Catch me if you Can and The Motherf*cker with the Hat on Broadway. We saw a couple of off-Broadway shows in June as well but July was so freaking hot outside that I wasn’t willing to leave the house, even to go to the theater. This weekend we are going to go see Henry V.

Last month I went and saw Jersey Boys, it is just finishing a long run and we got fifth row seats half price.

On Sunday afternoon we are seeing cult anime feature Tekkon Kinkreet at the Opera House with 3 live bands providing the soundtrack. Then off to catch Hairspray in the evening.
