Why is it tha when a none african american says the n-word, trouble comes their way. But, african americans call themselfs the n-word, and use it in music that all races listen to and sing to and say the word. Example; if a car thheif doesnt want to be called a car theif. Stop stealing cars.
I just going to assume good faith and answer the question factually: there is a double standard. Get over it.
Now in addition to some just sayin’, we have a dose of keepin’ it real.
Nice job.
I have no idea what this bit is supposed to mean. If a black person doesn’t want to be called the N word, stop being black maybe?
Yes, there’s a double standard - and this sort of thing happens all the time. I get to jokingly call my workmate “you lazy bastard” when he asks me to do him a favour - if I call a complete stranger a lazy bastard, I should expect a blooded nose.
I am allowed to make any number of drunken Irishman jokes while with my family and cronies. You are not, even if you tell the same jokes. There is a difference between within-group acceptable behaviour and outside-group behaviour.
Why do you feel you deserve the “right” to call someone a nigger without consequences?
Because it’s not the word that offends, it’s the loaded meaning and intent behind the use of the word. When a white person calls an African-American a “nigger” it conveys contempt. Worse than contempt. But when a rapper uses it in a song it conveys something completely different, which is something more like, “my brother, we got to be all together because white people call us ‘niggers’”. Although I am white so I am probably not the best person to articulate this last part, but that’s the general idea. I don’t know if black people use the word to each other to convey contempt.
My across the street neighbors were having an argument one night. An incredibly screechy, obnoxious woman was trying to mediate a verbal confrontation between one black man and one white man. I, of course, was rubbernecking because that’s totally my thing and it eventually escalated to the point where the black man started shouting at the white man, “Get out here, you fucking nigger. I’ll shoot you, nigger. You want to get shot, bitch? Blahblah blah.”
Incidentally, nobody got shot. But it seems that at least this particular black person used the word against a white person to convey contempt.
What is so hard to understand about this?
I can call my brother an idiot but if you do, I am going to punch you in the nose.
I believe that when blacks use the word amoungst themselves it is a way of saying the rest of the world thinks we are n—s so we need to stick together. Not a good form of positive reinforcement.
When my husband worked a night job they called him Burrito. In return he called them Chocolate.
straightup, this question is better suited to Great Debates than General Questions. Given the fact that we have had many previous threads on this subject, including this recent one, I suggest that you read some of them. If you still feel you have unanswered questions, you may start a new thread in Great Debates.
