It’s weird, I remember this being slow to start, but that must have been the “getting to know the characters” phase. On a rerun that isn’t an issue, so I enjoyed Emissary and A Man Alone more than the first time I watched them.
I just did a rerun of DS9 a few months ago. I’d only seen episodes during it’s original run, it was interesting to watch now that I’m older. Gul Dukat shows up almost immediately, and he gets weirder as the episodes run on.
And continues badly. The only time I enjoyed anything that actress did was when she was possessed by a Pah Wraith. In fact, until that episode I thought the actress simply couldn’t act; I now believe the writers just didn’t have anything interesting for her character to do.
I liked the TNG episode “Disaster” where she gave birth to Molly. It was because of Worf though, not her. “Congratulations. You are fully dilated to ten centimeters. You may now give birth.”
I’ve only gone through DS9 once. I’m waiting for it to stream instantly on Netflix so I can do it again. I tried Voyager, but I’ve stalled out in the middle of season 2.
Garak is my favorite Trek character of all time. Dukat and Sisko come in as close seconds, although the former is somewhat ruined by his descent into insanity in the seventh season. But up until then, Dukat is one of the most compelling antagonists (I hate the word “villain”) that Trek’s writers ever created.
I have to +1 on Garak being the best character on that show. I also have to give props to the almost sibling-like Love/Hate relationship that Odo and Quark have.
My wife and I are huge sci-fi/fantasy fans, but we could never fully appreciate DS9. I think we watched about 4 seasons of it, but it never fully held us.
Our fav. character is Sisko, which should be rather obvious since he is the Captain(eventually). However, it seems like a huge amount of episodes do not revolve around Sisko. We do love that one where Jake ages and we see Sisko visit him a various points of his life.
Don’t forget his simple-minded brother, Rom, and annoying nephew, Nog. Every sitcom is required to have an annoying kid in it. Also, don’t leave Moogie out.
