Just what L.A. needs. A touch of Sunnydale. (WTF?)

A promotional poster for season 5 of Ats makes me wonder who’s the star, who’ll get more airtime and where TheWB and Mutant Enemy is going with the show.

What do you guys think?
Link.

And I didn’t know we would have to wait that long for the new season - Oct. 8…

James certainly has more charisma than David Boreanaz, more range as an actor and a more interesting character to work with. It will probably be difficult for the directors not to let Spike take over the show.

I can understand why they displayed Spike’s face so prominently, but really, did they have to put his name in with the show’s title?

I like Spike a whole lot, but he’s like Batman or Wolverine (sorry to use geek references) - when in a group setting, he works best on the fringes.

They’re gonna need some real female power to balance the scales.

Eh, he’s this next season’s big draw. If Faith or Willow were going to make the switch, I’m sure it’d be them blocking out Boreanaz. Spike’s presence is definitely going to give the show a big focus though seeing as how apparently it was his death that fulfilled the prophecies that everyone else thought focused around Angel. The “Vampire with a soul” sacrificed himself, and is now going to become human. That was supposed to be Angel’s destiny…so what’s he going to do now, and how’s he going to react to it all? Main storyline, I’m guessing, and it’s all going to focus around Spike, so it only makes sense to make him a big deal

I don’t think this bodes well. It makes it look like Spike is the focus, not Angel. I have concerns about the direction ATS is taking, but, of course, will watch it anyway.

I understand that they are using Spike to lure in the old Buffy fans, but the show isn’t named “Angel” for nuthin.

Blech. I like Spike as a character, but I don’t think he does well in an ensemble show. He was great as recurring minor character in the first few seasons of “Buffy,” but it seemed that he stole the other characters’ thunder as soon as he became a main character. Of course, the whole bad boy archetype tends to bore the pants off me, so I’ll admit that I’m biased.

Either give the man his own show, or use him sparingly as a small player, but don’t let him hijack “Angel.”

Factual question:
I know there are a lot of Spike fanboys and girls on the net. But do we know that he was a big puller of ratings? It can me a mistake, listening too much to a loud minority.

To be fair to the producers, if they’re doing a poster for series 5 of a show, they’re going to want to focus on something big and new (As opposed to “Season 5: now without Cordelia!”). I’m no Spike fan, but he’s got a striking visual look, and the makers will want to advertise the Spike v Angel competition which is certain to be a big component of the new series.

It was bad enough that the writers of BtVS kinda ruined it in the last series, Im seriously hoping that the writers of Angel are going to concentrate on Spike more, because frankly, I aint interested… I mean come on! Its Angels show!

Well, I was at the Tampa con this weekend, and you guys don’t have to worry about James sucking time away from Angel, because James will be filming a movie in September and be gone for 7 weeks. His parts will be so small, in fact, that they will be able to shoot all of them for the episodes he’ll miss while he’s in Italy filming Italian Heat with Sean Bean and Derek Jacobi.

Also, considering the fact that Joss is A)Working the schedule around him and B)Offering enough money to interest James makes me think that the producers think that James is a big draw ratings wise. And they’re right. I just got back from the smallest con of the season—which sold about 1500 tickets. You should see the numbers he attracts to the big cons, and that’s only a small percentage of his fans. UPN did marketing polls and established that Spike is the most popular character, with Willow coming up second. If you do a random search on the net you’ll find fans talking about Spike everywhere. Even the sites that aren’t about Spike or are anti-Spike–all they do is talk about him.
There are also a whole multitude of peopel frantically buying ANgel DVDs S1 and 2 right now because they’ve never seen a single episode, but where James goes, so goes their nation.

Also, when Spike was on BtVS, his whole role was tied up with Buffy. When he’s on Angel, it shouldn’t be any different. I doubt very much he’s going to take storylines away from anybody because he didn’t take storylines away from anybody on BtVS. To quote James “I’ll be more than happy to show people my scripts. THe scripts were about 44 pages, my scripts were about 3 pages.” And “Joss told me that they didn’t know what do with me in S7, and they wanted me dead. But not to worry, because he’d resurrect me.” Joss was not all about Spike’s story in S7–it was all about Buffy.
Furthermore, the entire dynamic of Angel is far different from BtVS and allows for more individual story lines because the show is about adults who work together, not cliquish teens. I’m pretty confident Spike’s story will be all about Angel. How could it not be?
As for the poster, well, to quote Joss “The WB has a shiny new blonde thing, and they want to show it off.”

Figures as soon as I start watching Angel, they throw Spike into the mix. Oh, how I hate Spike.

Interesting Pepperlandgirl. Thanks for the info.
I hesitate to ask about your new sig, but curiosity got the better of me…

On Saturday when I got my autograph I gave him gummi boobies and mint nipples. The conversation went thusly

Me: My friends didn’t think I had the balls to give these to you (handing the box and the tin), so you know, I had to.
Him: (Smiling and laughing) I can’t wait to lick your boob!
Me: Thanks.
Him: And I don’t say that to all the girls.
Me: Hey, I believe you. (At this point, I’m thinking to myself I"M TALKING TO HIM COHERENTLY! WEE!!!)
Him: Have a good day. Oh, and you definitely have balls.
Me: (Didn’t say anything because they were pushing me out the door…)
