Justified 03/05 "The Hatchet Tour"

Winona wasn’t pregnant at the time. Raylan wants the promotion to make money he can give to W to help support the new baby - he got the money he was saving by doing bounty skip-traces stolen by the floozy bartender. He also wants to be someone his kid can look up to. Both of these were discussed early in the season.

Wasn’t Colt pointing his own gun (the 45) at the back of Boyd’s head? Then Boyd put it in a drawer and pointed his 9mm at Colt.

You’ve got that backwards. It was Boyd’s gun that he gave to Colt to point at his head.

I’m still trying to figure out why everyone would rather die than reveal who Drew Thompson was. How much of a bad ass is he exactly?

I think nobody knew, cept Hunter who owed him a lot.

Well Arlo sure knew something about it. I guess he was more scared of Theo Tonin, maybe?

Damn, why did you have to bring up Terriers? Best single season show ever. Makes me sad.

Harlan County folks - because they owed Drew for stuff he did during an old feud (added motivation to Boyd, who is trying to get in good with the Detroit drug dealers)

Theo Tonin / Detroit drug kingpins - to get revenge for Drew shooting him in the eye

Marshalls - to get the to the bottom of the outstanding missing drugs and missing person (added motivation for Raylan to earn a promotion to make more money for his soon-to-be baby)

Everything WordMan says + the fact that in Ky - this whole story is one of the bigger conspiracies we’ve had - so, for KY folks, this means alot more than the average person.

Got it - thanks

Wait, wut? You’re not implying that this season’s plot is based on a true story, are you?

Certainly am - news link here (which was not there the time I reported this in the first thread for the season) -

Andrew Thornton (aka “Drew Thompson”) - Andrew C. Thornton II - Wikipedia

and the ‘Bluegrass Conspiracy

[QUOTE=blurb about book linked above]
When Kentucky Blueblood Drew Thornton parachuted to his death in September 1985 carrying thousands in cash and 150 pounds of cocainethe gruesome end of his startling life blew open a scandal that reached to the most secret circles of the U.S. government. The story of Thornton and The Company he served, and the lone heroic fight of State Policeman Ralph Ross against an international web of corruption is one of the most portentous tales of the 20th century.

I remember when this story first broke -

Whose house did the fake Drew Thompson land in front of in the flashback scene that started this season? I got the impression, perhaps incorrectly, that it was Arlo’s house and that was Arlo who came out of the house to find the body (and the cocaine).

No. I just rewatched that, and it was a random guy in a regular suburban neighborhood. The guy’s wife was nagging him to take down the Christmas lights.

He was very menacing toward Ava… I guess that’s not such a good reason any more.

Arlo, being an asshole, was probably defending his own honor.

And if Shelby is anybody’s dad, I’d vote for Ellen May, whom he seems very protective of, or Mosley, whom he not only seems to have great affection for, but who has a strong resemblance to him.

What I don’t get is, with so many people trying to find him, why did he run for public office? If you’re trying to avoid criminals and marshals, it seems like running for sheriff would be the last thing you’d want to do.

Like he told Ellen Mae, you pretend to be something long enough you eventually stop pretending. He’s been home free for 30 years, when he ran for Sheriff there was absolutely no sign that anyone even knew he was alive.

Also, IIRC, he wasn’t actually looking for the job of sheriff – Boyd kind of strongarmed him to run for it. It may have brought more light on him if he refused.

Wow - no clue. Thanks for fighting my ignorance!

Your question prompted me to watch the show again, from the beginning. And thank you for that, because it’s damn fine TV.

In the pilot, Boyd used a rocket launcher to blow up a church. The church was a front for a dope operation (pot). Boyd didn’t bother to check that anyone was in the building. He yelled “Fire in the hole!” and without waiting for people who were nearby to get out of the way, he fired.

Boyd then shot his accomplice in the back of the head after accusing him of being a snitch.

He’s not a nice man.

My understanding was that, at that time, Goggins was not a regular and was supposed to be killed off in season 1. He acted himself into a full-time, starring role.
