Justified 3/13/12: "Loose Ends"

This week’s tagline:

Last week’s episode, and an attempt at a “the-season-so-far” synopsis

I figure the “soldier” Raylan’s pursuing is Tanner. He almost had him once already, but Tanner jumped out of a moving vehicle to get away.

“Where is Devil? I haven’t seen him around lately.”
“He’s calmed down a bit since you saw him last.”

Heh.

So, Raylan didn’t quite get Tanner, but some quick thinking still moved him one step closer to Quarles, but he’s now running hard up against Ellstin Limehouse.

It was good to see Boyd back in preacher-mode during the debate. Walton Goggins chews some scenery, and still sells the scene.

 Next week’s spolier: “Why wait?”

This show just gets better and better. GF and I were watching it and I said, “Is it wrong that I’m kind of rooting for the villains, they’re so good?” She agreed. And that’s not to knock the ‘good guys’; they’re great too, but Quarles, Boyd, Limehouse, they’re all great. I was worried last season after the powerhouse that was Mags Bennett, but this season has really been a good follow-up.

So, how do you think the gun is going to come back to bite Raylan before he finally takes down Quarles? Is Limehouse going to step up his game now and take a more active role, since Raylan made sure he knew that his involvement is now obvious?

What I can’t figure out is why Raylan is keeping the gun. Well, there’s a lot of things I haven’t figured out, but that’s the big one.

Since the gun can’t be traced to Raylan and Raylan’s no longer under suspicion for Gary’s murder, why keep it?

I want Limehouse and Nobel’s Holler back next season, but Mykelti Williamson is a very busy actor, so maybe this season is all we’ll get with him.

I think he’s keeping it to blackmail Quarles. After he visited the house and said, “Tell your boss I have the gun”, I took that to mean, “and if he doesn’t back down, it will be put to use.” How he’ll do that without being hit with obstruction or improper removal of evidence, I’m not sure. After the preview for next week, I’m wondering if he’s got a plan for it involving a shootout with Quarles.

I like Limehouse a lot and hope he sticks around. I like the low-key baddies like him a lot more than the balls-out ones like Quarles.

Another question that just hit me: Is Johnny going to betray Boyd? He’s starting to get annoyed with Ava, and thinks she’s coming between him and Boyd. Will he do something to remove her from the picture?

But if the gun can be traced to Quarles, why did Quarles plant the gun in the first place? Or did he plant a different gun? We saw him leave with the gun used to shoot Gary – the gun was planted later.

Which is very odd. Why didn’t they plant it right after the shooting? Why risk going back to the house? Unless they didn’t want to break into the house, and the gun was planted by the local cop who accompanied Winona to the house later.

I think Johnny was coming on to Ava, but one viewer’s come-on might be another viewer’s annoyance.

Do you think it’s significant that we saw Johnny get out of the wheelchair? I think it’s the first time.

I think he was coming onto her, too, but she rebuffed, or worse, ignored it which angered him. Then she went against him when it came to the pimps and hos game.
Then Boyd comes back and she says, “I need to talk to you in private. Now.” Johnny probably thinks she’s ratting him out to Boyd about the dispute about protecting Ellie Mae and at least the hitting on, if not the stumble walking thing.
I think his walking move is significant, but not sure why yet. Almost thinking that it’s showing he’s becoming his own man again, rather than relying on everyone else. This could lead to a showdown between him and Boyd.

Well, we knew from last season that Johnny can get out of the chair under his own power, and kind of stumble/shuffle walk around a bit, it’s just not very easy. Comes from being nearly cut in half at the waistline with a shotgun.

But I think his objection was that out of the “pims & hos” equation, it was the pimp who was the actual paying customer, not the ho. And it might be bad for business to turn on their own paying customers. It kinda sets a bad precedent with the current customer base as well as being a negative impactor on the sales and marketing of the services they provide for prospective future customers.

I think that Ava’s meta-point about the pimp’s & ho’s business landing on their doorstep doesn’t quite justify taking out the pimp to protect the ho.

As far as the gun goes, I think that Quarles tried to have it planted in Raylan’s car, but whoever was doing it got spotted by the bar owner (where Raylan’s now living). So instead, they planted it in the house.

It’s not that the gun can be traced to Quarles, it’s that the gun can be traced to the murder. Wherever the gun is found is going to cause problems for the person who seems to be in possession of it. As to why it wasn’t left there in the first place… good question. Until something changes, I see it as a plot hole; albeit a minor one in my opinion.

I agree with the Ava thing. My first reaction was “why is Johnny coming on to Ava?” I think it is significant about the wheelchair. I think there’s a lot more use for Johnny, plot wise if he can walk. I don’t think of Harland County, KY as being the most wheelchair friendly place.

Good call. I take back what I said about a plot hole. This totally explains why the gun was in the house.

Best line of the episode (from memory): “Social awkwardness is often the curse of genius.”

You stupid redneck! :). Of course Ryan will kill the bad guy with the same very weapon that the latter used to kill Gary.
Great show. I watched the first two seasons in a sitting. Now, of course, I am using non traditional methods to watch it down here in Argentina
