Which explains everything about the erratic, confusing nature of this season, IMHO.

Fer fuckin’ chrissakes, they have 3/4 of each year to devise a season arc and write it. Spending six months drunk on a beach and then throwing together half-thought, slipshod scripts with no direction in sight as production rolls on is so old-school it should be illegal.

Seriously. I love the show more than just about any other current program, but that’s weak. You decide early on who Drew is, and you BASE EVERYTHING AROUND THAT! Any misdirections, any subtle hints, any seemingly meaningless dialogue, should, upon Drew’s revelation, make you slap your forehead and say, Of COURSE!"

What they did is LOST-level writing. Never do that.

If you read Graham Yost’s post-mortems each week, you’ll see that the season-long story is not actually plotted out in advance as much as I thought. They were halfway through filming the season before they’d made their final decisions about who Drew Thompson would turn out to be. So most of the storylines are kind of slotted into place as best they can, but sometimes there will be loose ends that can’t really get wrapped up properly.

It’s just as plausible to say that Arlo was suffering from dementia, and that’s why he had those kids get the bag.

Did he mention other options for who Drew was or any other directions the season might have gone ?

If I remember right, they briefly considered Josiah, but they wanted to keep Josiah’s foot cut off, so that wouldn’t have worked. They also considered having Drew be one of those rich guys on the hill, but decided it would be more fun if Drew was someone we’ve met, not somebody totally new to the story. They then shot the scene where Shelby has Drew’s autopsy report on his computer monitor, to give us an early clue.

Don’t remember that scene … would it be particularly unusual for him to be looking at Drew’s autopsy report?

Hell if I know. I remember the scene – it was just a couple seconds. You’d see it and think Shelby was just morbidly curious.
