Unemployment has been extremely low for the past few years. The economy has been pretty healthy. Inflation has been easing off lately. But none of that seems to matter because there’s still this perception that the economy is bad, and that’s what’s important.
So we see that unemployment has gone up, and that has hurt stock prices, and the economy is hurting a bit. These are facts. But…
So people feel better about the economy. Ignore facts, in politics those don’t matter. This won’t hurt Kamala at all.
Remember that it goes both ways. It’s irrational to declare that Biden/Harris are in trouble because the perception of the economy is bad despite the numbers showing otherwise, and then say that Biden/Harris are in trouble because the numbers are bad despite the perception being good.
Yeah, it’s weird, but it could end up making the economy look better to voters.
We had a long discussion on the subject here in P&E:
Often people expressed frustration that polls were showing that everyone thought the economy was a disaster, even if the facts were otherwise. If that’s flipping the other way, it would be great timing.
Now that Harris is officially the nominee, can we start speculating about the convention? Do you think she’ll get some huge star(s) to perform? I mean, it’s no Kid Rock but dare we hope for Beyonce or T Swift? Will there be an appearance on SNL?
An interesting note in that article-she might do very well in Nevada. I wonder if there are places the Biden campaign had written off that Harris might succeed.
Georgia? Arizona? Maybe North Carolina? I doubt the Biden campaign had exactly “written them off,” but the post-debate polling seemed to be trending dire in these states, and would have likely forced Biden to just concentrate on PA, WI, and MI (not that Harris can take those states for granted, mind you).
Trump announces that he and Harris have agreed to a debate on Fox on September 4 to replace the previously scheduled ABC debate on September 10. Harris’ campaign has no idea what he’s talking about.
Looks to me like a lame attempt to turn the “too chicken to debate” idea back on Harris. If she doesn’t go along with this newly created Fox debate DJT will just start bleating that she’s scared to debate him.
I hope Fox comes out and says they have no idea what he’s talking about but Donald better watch out - I think the Harris campaign might decide to go along with it given a few tweaks. I’m rather confident she can wipe the floor with him even with Fox moderators asking the questions.
Evidently, neither did Fox News.
From Jeff Tiedrich’s newsletter:
Fox News has not proposed any such debate. they haven’t set a date, or named moderators, or set a location — or any fucking thing . the only thing actual fact in Donny’s post is that he’s chickening out of his already-agreed-upon debate with Kamala on September 10th. the rest of it is just bullshit — but that didn’t stop the worthless scribblers of the corporate-controlled media from uncritically swallowing this jungle-swamp fever-dream.
Trump Backs Out of ABC Debate and Proposes One With Harris on Fox
According to Mr. Trump’s post on social media, the previously scheduled debate to be hosted by ABC News was “terminated” once President Biden dropped out of the race.
“Donald Trump is running scared and trying to back out of the debate he already agreed to and running straight to Fox News to bail him out. He needs to stop playing games and show up to the debate he already committed to on Sept. 10,” Michael Tyler, the Harris campaign’s communications director said in a statement. He added: “We’re happy to discuss further debates after the one both campaigns have already agreed to. Mr. Anytime, anywhere, anyplace should have no problem with that unless he’s too scared to show up on the 10th.”
It’s been conflictingly reported that Trump has “proposed” a new debate with Harris and that he announced that the two campaigns have agreed on the new debate. Below is the actual Truth Social post, where he seems to be saying that he’s unilaterally agreed with Fox News on the timing and terms of a new debate with no mention of reaching agreement with or even discussing with the Harris campaign.
