Kamala Harris's choice of Tim Walz as VP

I meant regardless of how old Tim looks. She just looks good.

Walz has, according to that article, a retirement account and a pension. It makes sense, as a teacher, that he would have a pension. I’m not sure why a retirement account doesn’t count as owning stocks or bonds (what else does a retirement account invest in?).

That seems like more than a lot of Americans have. This seems to be code for “He’s not rich enough.”

Index funds. Yes, index funds own stocks and bonds, but that’s the point–the fund owns them, not you. You get the benefits of investing in the market without the risks of individually owned stocks and bonds.

I have a 401K but I don’t own stocks or bonds. I have no idea at any given time what’s in that account (as far as what it invested in). I could probably figure it out maybe if I really wanted to but meh. I just care about the dollar amount.

I have played the stock market and profited in the past, but don’t own any shares currently.

Yes, this. You don’t show up as a shareholder for any of those items.

And to circle back to the topic above, that’s an example of why progressives trust Walz more than someone who holds similar policy positions but is raking in the corporate speaking fees.

That’s what it seems like to me. For the party that whines about the Democrats “Not understanding the regular people in the fly-over states”, they have some pretty distorted notions about what those people are like as well. Aside from the owning a house issue, my finances are about the same: A good pension plan and a retirement savings account that’s invested in mutual funds.

Yeah that seems like a questionable argument. Certainly I consider the portions of my retirement investments in a few index funds as my being invested in the market.

Moderating: I think we’re getting into off-topic hijack now, especially when talking about our own investments.

Everyone, let this be the last post of the hijack please.

Walz jokes that he likes “white guy tacos” without much seasoning.

MAGA thinks that somehow makes him racist against white people.

The smell of desperation on their part is refreshing. They’re trying so hard and so feebly to find something to make hay against Walz.

They just don’t realize that Walz is white and allowed to make fun of white people. I mean, it was just a few weeks ago he just happened to turn white, and now he wants to be known as white.

They don’t understand laughing at yourself, so of course it must be a racist attack…against himself?!?

It’s so hard being white. The attacks never stop. We should all get the Medal of Honor, no, strike that, Medal of Freedom.

Plenty of white people like spicy food. There’s no reason for him to open himself up to these kinds of criticisms by making racial comments, even if they are self deprecating. It’s an unforced error. I hope if Harris ever gets complemented on her appearance, she doesn’t reply with something with racial undertones like “Black don’t crack!”. There are plenty of other ways to reply which don’t rely on racial stereotypes.

Oh, fer cry eye. It was not an, “error,” unforced or otherwise. MAGAats just have very sensitive feelings. It doesn’t matter what a non-MAGAat says, the usual MAGA suspects get all butt hurt. Yes, many lilly white people like spicy food. We all know that including the people complaining. Neither Walz nor Harris need to tip toe around these ridiculous whiners.

absolutely right. It’s a joke. White people are not hurt by this kind of joke. They are really desperate to find something to attack them about.

In particular, it makes Republicans who whine about “not being able to make jokes anymore” look like hypocrites.

When they are in an election where every vote counts, there’s no need to tee up this kind of stuff for their opposition to complain about. Some people will be offended by his comment or will be swayed by the R’s making hay over it. There’s nothing to be gained by saying “white guy tacos” and there’s the potential to lose voters. This election is going to be decided by the undecided and independent voters. How anyone can be undecided and independent these days is beyond my comprehension, but they are out there. Unless saying “white guy tacos” brings more voters to the ticket, don’t say it.

Being “authentic” brings more voters to the ticket. Not acting like a scared and overly scripted politician brings more voters to the ticket. Walz is real, and talks like a normal human. That counts. That also means he gets to make jokes about white guys.

The opposition will be ‘offended’ by anything he says. If he’d said he liked spicy tacos, they’d be insisting that no White Guy actually likes spicy food, and he’s just pandering to the colored people. Their ‘offense’ isn’t real.
