I am not offering an excuse for kambuckta only offering my perspective. I was surprised by her suspension because if I had wanted to start a joke thread containing profanity I would assume the BBQ Pit is the place of choice. I had no idea that there was any proscription about joke threads because I had not seen the sticky.
Generally I access the boards using view new posts and the stickies are never seen. I contemplated a post like this due to the Cajun Man and DrMatrix thread which I only discovered belatedly by accident. As it happens I budget every Christmas to give money to a needy cause and I was struck by the fact that if I had missed that thread for a few more days my money would have been allocated elsewhere this year.
I assume there is no ready solution other than checking each Forum once in a while but I was not aware that I was missing anything until recently. Perhaps others are better informed.
If no one replies it drops down the list and disappears. If there is only an occassional reply to a thread (like a sticky) I never see it. Watch the thread you put the test post in. In a day it will be gone. Every night when the server comes down for maintainence the view new threads shows next to nothing. Wait for 3AM.
Shit mate, I’m not lying. I’m not making things up. And yes I do read past page one but that doesn’t solve the problem. Stay up and at some time in the wee small hours, the boards will become unavailable. When they come back view new posts will show only new posts since the server came back. Really truly. I’ll take a photo and email it if you want.
I don’t use the View New Posts option because I prefer to go through the forums one by one; it gives the board a feeling of orderliness. But I didn’t find out about the prohibition against joke threads in the Pit by seeing the Sticky. I learned about about it because mods and other posters were talking about it. It didn’t take me long to catch a reference, either; I think I read someone comment about it within a couple days. Since then I have read references to the rule in many, many threads and in a few board-related LJs.
I think the mods and admins reach a point where they have done all they can to notify posters of the changes in board rules. At that point, it becomes our responsibility to pay attention and take notice of things. I believe Lynn has shut down at least a half dozen joke Pit threads and at least one fairly prolific and popular member has been suspended for a week since the rule was put into effect. It was mentioned in MPSIMS and ATMB. Short of emailing every board member or coming to our homes to point our mice to the Stickies, I am not sure what more the mods and admins can do to make us all aware of current events, or what we can reasonably expect them to do.
I have never felt that the mods have made unreasonable rules or have done little to make sure we’re made aware of them. I do, however, feel that some members (and I’m not directing this at anyone specifically) do not make much effort to familiarize themselves with board happenings. And when things like this happen, it’s ultimately those posters’ faults for not paying attention.
I just tried it. As soon as the board came back up, I hit “view new posts” and got a couple of pages worth, all posted before the board went down for maintenance.
It may be a problem unique to your account. In any case, good luck with it, I’m done here. Hope it gets resolved for you.
How, I get 7 all posted since 4.24 AM. Are you selecting view new posts from the forums index? What does it say in the address bar when the search is running?
Yes I understand that now. I didn’t mean the OP as any form of criticism I was merely pointing out that I was unaware that I was missing anything. I thought maybe others may benefit knowing that accessing the boards using view new posts means you may miss things. I thought I had made that plain in the OP.
By the way am I going crazy - does view new posts currently show pages of old posts as Berku says.
FWIW, I was unaware I was missing new rules, too, due to my method of surfing SD (same as the OP’s method). This thread and the suspension has brought it to my attention and I will be checking each forum periodically from now on. Live and learn, as they say.
The ‘view new posts’ option resets itself for me too, don’t ask, and always has done, after the board comes back up after the scheduled downtime. So, stop going crazy. Or maybe I should start going crazy, too ?
Could just be a conspiracy against the Aussies though :insert shifty-eyed smiley here:
Thanks Goo I’ve been watching the views go up and wondered if anyone would have a look and reply. Trust it to be one of us.
I wish I had pointed this out in the Cajun Man thread instead, but having contributed it kind of felt like bignoting. I just wanted tham to know that if it wasn’t a sticky more people would see it.
No, it’s not just an Aussie thing. I don’t see the stickies in “View New Posts” either, unless a new post has been made to that thread since the last time I viewed new posts.
I think that the sticky thread title should be changed to “no more JOKE threads, post parties, etc.” instead the term “game threads”, because I thought that meant threads about gaming, so I paid no attention.
Also, for what it’s worth, I believe that the Chicago Reader is just not up to the task of running this board. It has become bigger than just being about Cecil Adams’ stuff. They complain about it taking up too much bandwidth and reduce our privileges, but they won’t take that stupid honkin’ ass huge logo off every freakin’ page and won’t even entertain the thought of asking for contributions to improve their equipment.
Most of the users on this board have never read and will never read the Chicago Reader and why should they unless they’re from Chicagoland? So in light of that fact, I would say that the Reader has no real interest in this board other than promoting Cecil Adams.
