I have 3 dozen cookies made right now, and enough dough for 4 dozen more.
Surprisingly, they are not too bad.
Wikkit, I will be calling you later tonight to figure out all of the details.

I’m going to watch the KC stations tonight to get an idea of weather conditions tomorrow, will also check out the Weather Channel. I’m wussy about the heat, I’d rather be rained on.
Any contingency plans if it’s too hot, or raining? I’m going to borrow a cooler from my folks and we could have, at the least, ice water. If I also borrow their small chest cooler I could maybe have little cream pie tarts, but most likely it’s going to be cookies. But I had another idea. Anyone else like baklava? I’m going to the store later, having already decided, even with air conditioning, not to bake until late this evening. I can get filo pastry at the store for baklava. My version is not classic, I usually make it with pecans, not almonds or pistachios. But a number of versions use walnuts, I may try that. God, I love sugar, and baklava is served in those small pieces because of how sweet they are.
Awaiting a call. I should be home this evening.
Sorry folks, but my mom is away from home, and as such I couldn’t get her to e-mail me the family cookie recipies. So instead of ethnic Iowan food, you’ll have to do with peanut butter cookies and/or brownies.
Ben
Ummm, me love brownies, Wikkit!
Can someone who remembers the area we are going to give us an idea of what parking is like? Once we leave the restaurant, how difficult will it be to go back to our cars to get food, table, games, etc.?
Parking is pretty good on the Plaza, actually. Lots of parking garages, some street parking. There’s a parking garage near the restaurant.
And as of 3:52 this afternoon, I have no ride. I guess I’ll just ask my mom to drop me off.
If it’s raining, we can take refuge in the T household, about a 15 minute drive from the Plaza.
Figlio has a small parking lot, but right across 46th St. is the entrance to a large indoor public lot.
Mirror, my wife and I can pick you up if need be. We’ll be getting out of church on the Plaza at 11:30 or a bit after, so we’d have to zip to Brookside and zip back. Call me tonight if you want to arrange that. 3615312.
Thanks! My mom can drive me, though.
And she is going to kill me if she ever finds out that I’m meeting up with people whom I know only from the Internet.
However, with any luck, that will not happen.
Horseflesh, can you check your email please?
I am so looking forward to tomorrow!
So what kind of function did you tell her this is?
Don’t worry, only a few of us are serial killers. The rest are mad scientists, ruthless dictators, insurance salesmen, or lawyers.
Email has been checked and replied to.
Whoa, whoa, whoa. Step back. Who said anything about insurance salesmen? I just visited mine, and it appeared that he’d been using his “Insurance School Diploma Thingy” as a Rib Bib. Im kinda scared of them now.
I’m sure that for, say, 20 bucks apiece we can all keep a secret.
If I could make a last-minute suggestion. It sounds as if several people will be bringing treats, we could also use napkins, cups or paper plates. The latter could be used also for taking home a selection of goodies. With those who have said they are bringing something, it sounds like the loaves and the fishes miracle, we may end up having plenty to take away.
Maybe it would be easier to post the recipes in this thread too, if one feels so inclined.
Baklava, Midwest style
yield, 40 pieces
2 cups very finely chopped walnuts,
2 cups granulated sugar
cinnamon*
12 ounces butter
1 cup honey
filo(phyllo) pastry**
9x13 inch pan
*cinnamon is used according to taste, if you like it strong add a lot, if you prefer it milder, use less
**I use Athens brand filo, but there are others. It comes in packages of various sizes, and can be cut to fit the pan. There is also a 9x14 inch package available that works great.
Lightly butter the pan. Gently melt the butter. Mix sugar, cinnamon, and nuts and set aside. In the pan place one sheet of pastry and brush it with butter. Repeat five or six times. *#*Spread pastry with 1 cup of nut/sugar mix. Layer and butter three more sheets of pastry. Repeat from #twice more, top with final cup of sugar/nut mix, and on top of this layer and butter seven or eight sheets of pastry.
In the pan, cut the baklava 4x5 not quite through to the bottom of pan, and cut each piece in half. Bake at 350 degrees Farenheit
for 45-60 minutes, until top pastry is a rich, golden brown. Remove from oven and let set for just a few minutes while you gently warm the honey in a small saucepan. Finish cutting the baklava all the way through, and trickle the honey all over it, especially in the cuts. Allow to cool and serve.
This is not the recipe for you if you are counting calories!
Sperfur will be on the way in 40 minutes. If I don’t show up by 12:30, please start to worry about me.
I’m leaving in about half an hour, caravaning with Horseflesh, Horsefoal, and Horsefilly Ditto what sperufr said.
Ummm, preview is my friend.
Sperfur has left the building!
Ill be a bit late if anyone is still there to care. I have a sick animal I took from work, that i need to take vare f before I leave. I wont be any later than 12:30
I told my mom I was getting lunch with a friend and then we were just gonna hang out on the Plaza for a while.
It’s not really a lie. Except that it isn’t the friend I told her it would be.
