Karl Rove: How bad does it have to get?

So in recent weeks we’ve heard that:

Karl Rove pressured Foley to stay in the Senate for two more years when Foley was thinking of resigning to become a lobbyist, on the grounds that they wanted to maintain their majority. Rove had to know that Foley had an eye for the pages at that time. So, live boy.

Karl Rove was involved in the outing of covert CIA agent Valerie Plame. So, dead girl. (OK, she’s not actually dead, but it’s not for lack of tryin on ol’ Karl’s part.

One of Rove’s senior staffers, Susan Ralston, had to resign because she was directly implicated in the Abramov corruption scandal. So, sacks of money lying around.

How bad does it have to get before this sack of shit goes to jail, or at least back home with his tail tucked between his legs.

I know, I know. He’s just too good at rigging elections to let go. The Pubbies know how to compromise where their ethics are involved. In fact, on the evidence, they’re REALLY good at it!

<sarcasm/cynicism>Evil Captor, why are you a godless, evil heathen who hates Amurrica whilst swift boating with terrorists?</sarcasm/cynicism>[

BZZZT! First of all, Foley is in the House, not the Senate. Second of all, Foley’s district is so solidly Republican that there would be no reason to worry about losing that seat to the Dems if he had resigned 2 years ago.

Am I missing something? I thought it has been conclusively shown that Richard Armitage was responsible for this.

Depends on how you define “responsible”. Armitage was the first guy to out her, but Rove sustantiated it (apparently). He may also have substantiated it to other reporters that Armitage hadn’t told.

Armitrage fell on his sword and declared himself to be the original source, but we still have the testimony of reporters that Rove was out there telling them Plame was a CIA agent. And if you want to believe Armitrage’s baloney, you’re welcome to, but I don’t believe it. This has “Rovian dirty trick” written all over it.

Bzzzt, indeed. I find it extremely reasonable to suppose that Rove would pressure an incumbent to stay on two years out of an election. Let’s face it, when there’s no incumbent, any seat is much more vulnerable. I can easily see Rove pressuring Foley to stay on long enough to keep Bush’s Congressional majorities in both house of Congress. It was probably a “no brainer” for Rove. Which is of course what it turned out to be.

So your evidence for this is, “It’s JUST the sort of thing that Rove would do?”

We have the testimony of reporters that Rove was blabbing about Plame being a CIA agent. That gets him on the hook for ‘involved’ which is the EXACT wording I used in the OP. I personally think he ran the op, because he has a history of such ops. You are free not to learn from history.

I’m going to give Rove a little bit of a pass on this one. He almost certainly knew that Foley is gay, and may have heard some rumors about an eye for the pages, but it’s likely (IMO) that he didn’t know about the extent of Foley’s inappropriate contact with the pages.

If Rove had known, then the best possible outcome would have been for Foley to go away quietly, so that another Republican could take the seat. As it is, it’s almost certainly going Dem. I don’t think Rove would have put an otherwise safe seat at that much risk.

Rove’s ignorance may very well have been willful, but then again, it wasn’t really Rove’s place to investigate. It’s hard to hold the fact that other people (Hastert, etc.) were not doing their jobs against Rove.

Don’t get me wrong; Rove is an evil man, and should have been thrown out of the White House on his ass for his role in the Plame outing alone. I just can’t get too worked up about his role in Foley’s scandal.

Rove’s an evil man and he’s done a lot of evil things. But I have’t until now heard he had any connection with the Foley scandal.

Maybe. Also could be that he barely knew that Foley existed. The WH staff is not known to have enormous respect and deference to the House, and they have in excess of 400 members (yeah, Bevis, I said “members”. STFU.) Probably on the 3X5 card in Rove’s file, as a reference to a possible pressure point if the Congresscreep should prove uncooperative on some vital issue of national security, like exempting the Mariannas Islands from certain pesky Constitutional thingies.

And your evidence for your other assertion?

And of course, we have the testimony of the person who made the initial claim that Rove was pressuring Foley to stay in office. Foley himself, IIRC.

Here’s a link on Rove’s involvement in the Foley scandal. It’s from a blog associated with the New Republic.

Hold on there. In this thread “we” don’t have any testimony-- all “we” have is your post. How about a linky-loo? And you claim in the OP that Rove “had to know” about the page issue, but I don’t see that at all. Besides, if he “had to know”, then so did plenty of Democratic Comgressmen.

Why am I not suprised that your cite is blog.

Look, if all you’re saying is true, you should be doing the happy dance. Had Rove not (allegedly) intervened, and Foley stepped down 2 years ago, he almost certainly would’ve been replaced by another Republican. As it is, that seat might go Dem this time. What’s not to like about that?

If the Wikipedia article about Rove is accurate, Rove has more than 36 years of political espionage and hiding his dirty tricks footsteps. Whatever may be attributed to him in the OP should be a cakewalk for Rove.

Further proof that Rove is not an evil genius, but rather is a clever idiot.
