Kathy Griffin and Trump Derangement Syndrome

A photo that actually shows what the fuss is about - Kathy Griffin Beheads Trump

Pretty awful. And hard to dismiss as ‘well the other side does it too!’ argument made by most posting here so far.

What a shocker.

Effigies have been around since the nation’s founding. This is just somewhat more graphic. What’s the difference between showing a hanged figure and a decapitated one?

In one I’d guess you’d claim it was racist and vile but typical of right-wing thought and depths they’d go to make a point, and in the other you’d “wish it were true”.

What’s the fuss? She apologized, saying she went too far. She doesn’t deserve all the negative covfefe that she’s getting.

I generally like her and Trump can fuck right off, but I think it’s a bit much. Not the spirit of it - as mentioned by BobLibDem, effigies have always been around- but it’s just feckin’ disturbing. Not outrage worthy, or treasonous, or threatening. Just gross and not remotely funny.

I initially thought it was real, and considered making a donation to Ms Griffin’s defense fund.:frowning:

Meh.

I am absolutely unpersuaded by any claims that these pictures might transform any viewer into a actual violence-inflicting danger from a previously benign disposition. In other words, if anyone is motivated by these to hurt the President for real, they were not tightly wound to begin with, and that’s not Griffin’s fault.

I certainly don’t think this a pinnacle of comedy or political commentary, but Griffin doesn’t show up at my office and tell me what to do; I’ll grant her the same courtesy. I think she’d agree she went too far in terms of effective theater, and she’s apologized, but that’s a calculation for her to make, and she did.

I didn’t seek out her political guidance before this, and I still won’t, but . . . meh.

This at least seems more honest. Instead of the sanitized depiction of death that you see in a typical effigy, you have something that is more visceral.

I’m a little uncomfortable with effigies as a general concept. I feel like there are better ways to register dissatisfaction with a person than fantasizing about violence against them. This particular instance is pretty gross. I’m glad she apologized.

I’d like to express my outrage, but I’m not sure what words to use. Perhaps you could help by linking to the outraged post you made about Ted Nugent’s threat to murder Obama? TIA.

At first glance, the photo made me think of classic paintings of Judith beheading Holofernes but nothing in the articles suggested that was the angle they were going for. Too bad; that could have classed up an otherwise tasteless photo session.

The artist who painted that gave Holofernes the face of her rapist. I can forgive that sort of effigy.

Yeah . . . Liberals are so hyperbolic, amiright!?

(Also, FTR, I find Kathy Griffin’s photo in poor taste/inappropriate).

I saw a tweet:

Why aren’t you Liberals denouncing Kathy Griffen?

– We are.

What if this was done to Obama?

– It was.

You people are horrible!

– Um, okay.

This is post #21. Can you list which posts that preceded yours made the argument “well the other side does it too”? Because I don’t think there are 11 posts that made that argument. I don’t think you made that post or wrote that sentence I quoted in good faith. IMHO, your assertion cannot be shown to be accurate by the facts and also in my opinion you posted it knowing that.

Kathy Griffin should step down from the head of the DNC, and I will never support her again in her attempts to run for office.

Shamelessly stolen from Twitter. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Yep, pretty clear evidence of Trump Derangement Syndrome, though perhaps not in the way the OP intended.

Yeah, that’s really not what is happening here. We’re actually condemning this, but bringing up that the right - you know, YOUR PEOPLE - really don’t have the moral high ground in this given the flood of hate directed at Obama.

Kathy Griffin is a moron and an attention whore and this was completely wrong.

It is wrong now and it was wrong when your people did similar things with much greater frequency.
