Not that anyone probably cares, but Kathy Griffin is leaving Fashion Police. After the departure of Kelly Osbourne last week and the replacement of George Kotsiopoulos, it leaves Giuliana Rancic as the only original cast member and her status might be questionable after the little brouhah over her ‘smells like weed’ comment.
I read her full statement this morning and I liked it. She is like Lady Gaga, one of those people who has a lot of fans who are weird and different. And she embraces it. And it was awkward to have her on a platform that was about poking fun of people. It felt like she had a thought process of “Well we can take the piss out of rich, beautiful people, that’s ok! … wait, we shouldn’t be doing that either. This isn’t fun anymore.”
I didn’t particularly like Joan’s style of humor, but she did own it. Kathy can admire her while not emulating her. I applaud Kathy’s decision.
I wholeheartedly agree with every word in this post.
This show was an occasional guilty pleasure back in the Joan days. But it should have been retired when she passed. Hopefully that’s what they will do now.
This is disappointing and confusing to me. I think KG is perfect for this show and the few episodes she did had me laughing out loud. Obviously it’s her choice to do whatever but it just doesn’t ring true to me. Is she now changing her whole schtick? I’ve never her do anything that wasn’t about dissing people.
I can sort of buy Kelly’s claim of righteousness. She praised practically everything no matter how ugly or ridiculous and when she did say something negative she always prefaced it with a kind word about the person. I’d always assumed she just didn’t want to be crossed off the party lists of any of the cool kids. If she truly doesn’t want to be involved with a show whose core is mean spiritedness, well good on her I suppose.
As for Giuliana, for the longest time I could barely stand her. It’s only this season when she’s gotten saucier that I’m starting to come around. Because, that’s , ya know, what the show is about. Also, there wasn’t anything remotely racist or even overly cruel about her original comment.
Kathy wasn’t able to separate the celebrity from the fashion. You have to be able to knock what someone’s wearing even if you like them personally, which is why she wasn’t a good fit.
Time for the show to die.
Yeah, this show only existed because Joan Rivers was great at it. Time for it to go.
I am a Kathy Griffin fan, but…she doesn’t want to poke fun of people? That’s her entire shtick! She ridicules and lampoons celebrities and celebrity culture. She is all about mocking glamorous A-list people (who often deserve to be skewered.)
Kathy has no problem making fun of entitled a-holes like Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan, but she has a hard time with celebs who are weird and different, like Lady Gaga. She seemed to feel bad about critiquing Lady Gaga’s outfits because she appreciates her weirdness.
Exactly. If Kathy is making fun of you it’s because you deserve it. Not because you made a poor fashion choice.
Wow; **Sahara Tea **and Shakes have a totally different perspective of Kathy than I.
I’ve never noticed any discernment or particular sense of conscience in her choice of whom to ridicule. I’d always assumed it was just her brand of humor to mock anybody who was relevant at the moment and that she didn’t even necessarily mean it, or if she did, she didn’t really care what people thought.
I guess it probably is the end of the show and I’ll miss it. It combines two of my favorite things (fashion and comedy) and I always felt that snark aside, all of the panelists were overly complimentary a vast majority of the time.
I feel that with leaving this show she is re-evaluating her schtick.
