Kayaking the North Atlantic

How many people have kayaked across the North Atlantic? Specifically, I mean documented cases; not “Inuit have done it for a thousand years”. I’m curious about people who have done it as a “challenge”, rather than a way of life.

Two guys rowed across… Almost died… All on your own paddle power? Without a supply ship, gonna be tough to carry nuff.

I know that Peter Bray tried in 2000 and had to be rescued
here’s something about it

I’m not sure if there have been more recent attempts.

Here you go Johnny - this link is to Ocean Rowing dot com. Ton’s of info…I have seen one of the boats up close. Basically, two people in a modefied pedal power boat…one sleeps and rests the other pedals/rows…two hour intervals. Plenty of rations…There are detailed timelines and daily logs…One of the logs has as week long storm in it where one of the team members broke an arm…yet still stuck it out.

Interesting links, so_da_ne and Phlosphr. Looks like fun! (Although my butt gets sore after a mere few hours in a kayak, so I don’t think I’ll be trying it myself. )

Not sure about kayaking, but numerous people have rowed across the Atlantic, the first pair travelling from Cape Cod to Ireland in 1966.

There’s even a race every few years from teh Canaries to Barbados, Here’s a link to last year’s race site. the winning boat completed the 2,900 mile journey in 40 days, 5 hours.

There’s boats are rowed, no pedal power involved.

I’m not sure if you could fit enough supplies in a kayak, the rowboats are 24 feet long and fairly broad to fit in all the stuff they need to make it across.
