Keith Moon at the Isle of Wight

I just borrowed The Who Live at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970 today from a friend and am watching it.

Keith Moon has always been one of my favorite drummers, but I’ve never seen him play. He is awesome to watch. He’s so . . . I don’t know how to describe it, except that his physicality exactly matches his sound; spastic and powerful.

I’m getting such a kick out of this. My favorite track so far is I Don’t Even Know Myself.

I love how Keith contrasts with John Entwistle. John just stands still the whole danged time, like he’s been glued in place, while Keith is busy almost knocking over his drumset.
Roger Daltry maintains the position of most borringest musician in the band.

Can I also say how refreshing it is to watch musicians who are still clearly young and having fun and are… unpolished. There’s no production value in this at all. Just four guys, some in silly clothes, and their instruments. They grin, joke, etc etc (except Daltry; see note above). In contrast to a lot of ‘new’ musicians who come very . . . produced right from the get-go.

You should also check out the Rock n Roll Circus DVD.

The Who do A Quick One on that, and literally steal the show. Amazing to watch.

Which reminds me that The Who just isn’t The Who without Entwhistle and Moon.
