I apologize to any gay readers but I have just come to believe that the most virulently anti-gay people, politicians in particular, are just in the closest, afraid to come out and covering up self hatred. It is the basic assumption I have when I see people like Fred Phelps. Why else would they have such strong, and strange, opinions about something that would otherwise have no effect on their lives?

He doesn’t have any power any more, When he was in office ,he could have done some good, but he did not. Now that he is a private citizen, he can not do much at all. What can he do now? He could have made a difference a few years ago.
Plus, someone needs to put a detailed questionnaire in front of him asking him about each and every issue associated with LGBT rights. There are plenty of conservatives who are against things like preventing employment discrimination, allowing gays in the military, extending benefits to same-sex partners (such as social security benefits), having states recognize other states’ SSMs, etc., etc. How do we know he isn’t one of these types of conservatives? Simply coming out of the closet doesn’t automatically mean that he’s going to beneficial to gay rights. He could turn out to be beneficial in a couple of specific areas while being extremely detrimental across a whole slew of others. Maybe in 20 years, I’ll look back and say he did good in the end, but I’m not giving him the benefit of the doubt right now. As far as I’m concerned, he’s still in the “keep your enemies closer” category.
Apparently, he’s jumping right into the fight for marriage equality, and hosting a benefit for the American Federation for Equal Rights (the group litigating Perry v. Schwarzenegger). Ticket pre-sales have raised $750,000 so far. I’m not about to like the guy, but that’s more than I’m ever going to be able to do for the cause.
I tend to believe that evil people are stupid.
If you come across evil people who are very smart, it might be a good time to arrange an “accident”. Failing that, remove yourself as far as possible.
