Kentucky Route 0

An unconventional computer game.

There is no action. There is a story of sorts, but the way it is told breaks all the expected narrative traditions. There are no puzzles, except that literally every single thing in the game is a metaphor or reference to something. For example, Act I, Scene I opens at Equus Oils. It was obvious enough that the main characters are named after mathematicians, but for some reason it took me the longest time to work out that

I bought this game on Steam six years ago, when there were only two acts out.

If it’s finally finished now, I guess I’ll have to go back and start it over.

I’d forgotten all about this, but I’d loved those games. Reminded me a lot of Twin Peaks.

I’ll buy the fifth installment immediately.

If you play the whole thing, don’t play more than an episode per day, otherwise it is too much, even though the game is theoretically not that long — the whole point is to think about it.

Especially Act IV is worth playing a couple of times to see all the scenes. There is also a short interlude following each act.

The pace is slow, and the game is haunting. I suppose I must have also thought about Twin Peaks, but it’s not like Disco Elysium where the writers were obviously directly inspired by David Lynch (and other stuff, like RPGs).

I liked it but it’s more of an interactive story or work of art than a game.
