Kentucky Route Zero

I finished Act IV last night and I’m still trying to compose my thoughts. This is the greatest adventure game I’ve ever played, but it doesn’t have any memorable puzzles and the plot is thin. However, the dialogue is wonderful and the graphics, though minimalistic, can be breathtaking.

The game reminds me a lot of Twin Peaks. Though ostensibly a murder mystery, Twin Peaks is really about a set of fascinating characters living in David Lynch’s surreal vision of a community. The plot of KR0 centers on a truck driver trying to deliver antiques to a mysterious address. But it’s really about the bizarre people he meets during one melancholy Kentucky evening.

As with Twin Peaks, the journey is more important than the destination. The dialogue trees let you focus on the delivery, but there are plenty of options for finding out more about the characters and their histories. And the writers have clearly put an extraordinary amount of thought into their characters.

I wish I could write a better description, but it’s a hard game to nail down. Someone uploaded a fan-made trailer, so that should give people a better idea.

I played the first chapter and loved the creepy, suspenseful atmosphere. But I decided I wasn’t going to be stuck waiting for long times between chapters and would wait to play when the whole thing was out.

Is this the final chapter?

No, Act V will be the final chapter. Unfortunately, no one knows when it’s coming out. It might be a while.

Looking at the video on Steam, it almost looks like an elaborate side-scroller. Is it?

No, it’s not a side-scroller - the graphics are much more interesting than that.

At the same time, if you’re looking for puzzles, you may be disappointed.
