Key Binding in WoW

Can someone help me do this, please? I am having a tough time following the instructions as they are on the site. If you could just give me a step-by-step “Here, Doofus” kinda help, I would appreciate it very much!

I think I could level higher and quicker if I could just hit numbers instead of clicking on the sword images.

Thanks Kiddos!

I’m pretty sure it’s just:
ESC -> Keybindings. Then you click the little red button next to the thing you want to change (say, “action bar 1” which would be the first icon on that default bar on the bottom) and press a key (or combination, like ctrl+z) and it will bind that to the command.

Yeah. What he said.

Your main bar is already bound to 1 through =. If you want to bind the additional bars, or rebind a key in your regular bar, just go to the main menu (click on the computer icon or hit ESC) and then choose keybindings.

Simple.

seriously, its the ultimate gamers toy, worth every friggin cent.

I have one of these for WoW, and yea, it’s crazy awesome. Beware though, support from the company is a bit thin on the ground. Can you use it with Vista yet?

With the Ergodex, if you assign control, shift, and alt to keys you can literally have hundreds of key assignments. I have about 150 assigned on mine.

If you want to go really crazy, you can assign over 700 commands on an n52 Nostromo Speedpad if you know what you’re doing. But you can’t move the keys around with that pad…

On a related note, you may want to rebind your movement keys slightly. By default, A and D turn your character and Q and E strafe. Many players recommend rebinding A and D to strafe, with no keys for turning; you only use your mouse for turning. Not only does it free up the Q and E keys for other bindings, you also end up moving around more smoothly. It makes such a difference in PVP combat that “keyturner” is a derogatory term for an unskilled player. It takes a little while to get used to, but it’s well worth switching over.

Is that used in addition to a “real” keyboard, or do you have to use it instead of a keyboard?

I’d like the flexibility it would add to some keys, but I’m not sure I want to give up my ergo keyboard for typing.

I find the default keybinding interface cumbersome because you have to bind keys to specific action bar buttons, and can’t bind them directly to the spell - so if you wanted to rearrange your action bars for some reason you’d have to rebind all your keys.

If you don’t want to blow the cash on a fancy keyboard, there’s a really handy little addon you can download called “Spellbinder.” It basically lets you customize all your keybindings without having to open your spellbook and put spells on your buttons. I’m a total WoW addon addict, but if there was one mod I couldn’t live without, this one is it. (Well that is, until I discovered Questhelper…)

“Questhelper”?

Ya lost me,** Pearl**. Is this something to help a poor, ignorant, down-trodden gamer like me?:confused:

Q

I stopped playing for a little over a year and recently came back to see if the new expansion was going to add anything exciting. I felt completely lost with my characters so I rebound all of my keys, and I found an excellent setup for myself that has made everything twice as fast for me.

I have a standard keyboard, but for this to work you need a higher end mouse. Specifically, a mouse with two buttons on the side near where the thumb rests (usually used for “forward” and “back”). This is what I have.

Through the mouse’s control program, I assign one of those buttons to Control, and the other to Alt. Then, I rebind the skillbar so that the first four skills are mapped to 1-4, the next four are bound to Control-1 through Control-4, and the final four skills on the bar iare mapped to Alt-1 through Alt-4. By pushing the buttons on the mouse and hitting 1-4 on the number row, my entire skill set is accessible to me without my fingers ever leaving the movement keys. This has improved my reaction time by at least 100%, and I can always move and use all of my abilities at the same time, without ever having to stop to hit keys.

Jesus Christ, Jules!!!:confused::smack:

Check out Curse.com or WoWInterface.com where all the best addons can be found.

“QuestHelper tells you how to finish your quests in the easiest, fastest manner. It includes a database of quests, monsters, and items, telling you the exact location of that dang Perfect Satyr Horn you can’t find. It also computes the fastest path to complete all your quests - and gain experience - as quickly as possible.”

And if you also have the Cartographer map mod (it’s like Googlemaps for WoW), Questhelper will display an arrow at the top of your screen that points the direction of the nearest quest. I actually didn’t start using these two mods until recently when I decided for some crazy reason that I wanted to dual-box and power level a priest/pally combo to 70. It made things go MUCH faster. Don’t ask me what I’m gonna do with these two characters now, though - they’ll probably just gather dust unil I run out of stuff to do with my other two characters in the expansion.

No, I have no life… :wink:

I was a big fan of Questhelper/Cartographer until I figured out QH was the mod that was causing my computer to freeze (requiring a hard reboot). Not sure what the issue was, but someone pointed me in the direction of Carbonite, which does everything QH/Cart does and then some – and I was instantly smitten :slight_smile:

Carbonite doesn’t seem to work well with Gatherer, so I had to stop using it (I’m on a Mac). I wish it did, I’d switch over in a heartbeat.

You can use both keyboards at the same time if you like.

Pearl I did dowload Carbonite off the Curse client, and I got that little map that you can toggle open. I haven’t added Questhelper yet, though.

That’s an MX revolution right? If you REALLY want to have fun you could bind the search button (under the scroll wheel) to shift, that’s personally my Ventrillo Press to Talk key, but you have a good idea, and adding shift could make it an even better setup if you want to hotkey your mouse like that (or, hell you could leave shift alone and bind it to something arcane like “]” and have another set of combos that are ]+key since shift is really easy to reach).

Bear in mind I main a straight affliction warlock so there aren’t enough keys on the keyboard for all my various attacks, so I’m in desperate need of alternate ways to hotkey things. If you play, like, a rogue you could probably completely ignore my suggestion and be fine with all 3 of your abilities.

Keep in mind that if you use alt, shift and control as shift states you should have more than enough keys to suit your needs. It is possible to map hundreds of functions to game pads this way. I figured out a way to map around 600 functions to my N52 Speedpad.

I have a mouse similar to Jules’ but with a side to side tilt wheel in addition to the usual scroll. G5 Laser Mouse It hadn’t occured to me to put CTRL & ALT on the thumb buttons but now I really want to try it.

I use the Tour Guide mod rather than Questhelper. QH is nice but can really spike your memory usage. Tour Guide is a little more focused and a lot less resource intensive.

my UI at its most basic.

I haven’t played recently enough to get more varying mods but here it is

keybindings are as follows, mind you this is a lvl60warrior using macros for most skills. This isn’t my lvl70 set-up there are more skills and i assume lvl80 will be even more intense with keybindings with all the newer skills.

1 = attack
2 = charge macro
3 = intercept macro
4 = berserker’s rage
5 = rend macro
6 = deathwish
7 = cleave
8 = none in screenshot
9 = none in screenshot
0 = challenge shout (all stances)

  • = intimidation shout (all stances)
    = = retaliation (battle), shield wall (defensive), recklessness (berserker stance)

T = whirlwind
Shift +T = Heroic strike

kept QWEASD as movement keys and strafing

R = Sunder armor
Shift+R= battle shout
G = Mount/dismount
Shift+G = overpower macro
F = Mortal strike/Bloodthirst depending on spec
V = Slam
Shift+V = Disarm macro
Shift+F = victory rush if i was 70, heroic fury in Screenshot
C = shoot gun/bow or throw
Mouse Wheel up = int shout
Mouse Wheel Down = bloodrage
middle mouse button = Every man for himself race special (or pvp trinket)
X = piercing howl
Shift+space = hamstring macro
Z = pummel macro
Shift+E = Execute macro

Numpad’s - = shield slam in Screenshot
shift+middle mouse button = top trinket in screenshot

Shift+2 and Shift+3 = intervene macro if i was 70
Shift+1 = target topmost party member

This is just a basic idea of what i have, i remapped a lot of the default blizzard hotkeys to different things to maximize the Left Hand keys for quick skills.

It takes time to get used to a new set up of keybinds and remembering which skill represents what keystroke. Just practice keep your buttons close, use SHIFT, CTRL, and ALT keys, if u like the F1-F12 use those too, i find them to be too far away from easy access.

Lots of ppl have different set ups, and if keybinding isn’t for you, just try to master mouse clicking. I mouse click when i tanked for the most part, not everyone is a super-pro gamer with uber reflexes. Just have fun when you play is my advice. If you wanna go hardcore, it’s all about UI, macroing and keybinding.

Oh I forgot to add, DO NOT USE a cordless mouse. They have a slight delay in reacting, i abhor them.
