Keyboard Shortcut in creating a new tab in Safari 5.1.7

My name is Tommy Hansen and I can’t use a regular mouse due to Cerebral Palsy. Therefore I have to rely on using a head pointer to access the keyboard and mouse keys on the numeric keypad. I have Safari 5.1.7 on my mac OS X and for some reason the command+T to open a new tab window doesn’t work at all. I have checked the keyboard shortcuts in System Preferences to see if it’s listed, but it’s not. Then I checked the Preferences in Safari, and it says to press the command key and left click the mouse button which I have no idea which button is the left click button on the mouse keys. Would someone please help me figure this little minor problem out?

Thanks.

You might have something else mapped to command-T. Look through Keyboard Shortcuts again, and see if there is something else listed as cmd-T. It could be in any of the sections.

I have Safari 5.1.7 on OS X 10.6.8.

Command + T opens a new tab.

Command + (left) clicking on a link opens that link in a new tab, as does right clicking and selecting “Open Link in New Tab”.

If it’s not working for you I’m not sure what to do beyond checking the shortcut assignments in System Preferences…my guess would be that it has been reassigned, maybe by your pointing device software??

I’ve looked under System Preferences in keyboard shortcuts and under where it says Services - Internet, there’s no cmd+t for creating a new tab in Safari. Should I add cmd+t there or in the Safari Preferences itself?

You can click the little plus sign all the way to the right of the current tabs to create a new one.

Or you can go up top to File -> New Tab (it’s the second option, right between New Window and Open File…)
