For anyone who uses keyboard shortcuts, the Ctrl key is one of the most frequently used keys on the keyboard. Yet it’s in a very awkward position, and operated with the weakest finger. Is there an ergonomic keyboard available that’s easier on the left pinkie?
The wikipedia page on the Control Key has a discussion of alternative keyboard layouts, remapping the control key, and alternative ways to press the key.
There are programs that will remap your keyboard. You have to sacrifice another key though, at least to the extent that its function probably has to be put on the original control key.
As a gamer, I regularly hit the control key with the edge of the heel of my left hand. It’s very fluid and works quite well–hitting it with my pinky wouldn’t work nearly as well (and I never use Ctrl on the right side of the keyboard). I suppose that, depending how much you use Alt, you could rebind Ctrl to Alt and hit it with your thumb instead.
I’ve also ripped capslock off my keyboard–maybe you could remap that to Ctrl? I practically never have a good reason to activate capslock, since I only ever hit it by accident. Holding down Shift for the few times I need exclusively capital letters works much better for me.
There are also various pedals and foot-operated “keyboards”. foot keyboard - Google Search
