Kicked in the Junk by Father Time

I turned 40 two days ago. To celebrate, I ran a mile and then did my usual workout at the gym.

Everything was going great - chest press, dumbbells, pulldowns. Then I hit the abs. I use a machine where you extend your arms and grab two handles, then push the handles forward by bending at the waist. I set it to my regular resistance and did two sets with no problems. About halfway through the third set, my lower back started to tighten up. Like a damn fool, I pushed through the rest of the set. By the time I hit ten reps, I was shaking like a dog shitting a peach pit. But I made it back home all right and thought I’d be OK.

The next morning I woke up and went to work, which involves parking my rear end in a chair for extended periods of time. After an hour or so, I had to get up to fetch something from the printer. Couldn’t do it. Lower back feels like it has a hot knife in it. For the last day and a half I’ve been walking sort of bent over, like Igor from Dr. Frankenstein. I get these shooting pains up and down my legs. I am prone to sciatica and can induce it merely by sitting on my wallet. But this is ridiculous.

Is it all downhill from here?

Pretty much. You have only your memories to enjoy–write them down, though, because you’ll start forgetting.
gigi, 40 and a half in a few days

:frowning:

No fun.

Yes, I’m afraid it is indeed all downhill. But you are doing the right thing by trying to keep from happening too quickly!

If you don’t like 40, you’ll really hate 50!
:frowning:

They’re saying 40 is the new 70.

Yeah, well, 70 is the new dead, so that don’t help much…

Joe

Hate to break the bad news, but a few months after I turned 40, my L5-S1 disc blew out without any dramatic cause such as a car wreck or trying to lift the refrigerator, causing much pain and sciatica. I meet with the surgeon next Monday to discuss when the microdiskectomy will be done.
