Kid's book search help: Subway time travel

I’m trying to remember the title or author of a book I read in elementary school. This was in the late 60s or early 70s.

It’s about two kids - brother and sister - who live in contemporary New York. They hear a story that if you stand in the very front of the lead car in a subway train and make a wish it will come true. They wish themselves to the Dutch Colony of New Amsterdam in 16-whatever-it-was. They find out how hard colonial life was, they have some adventures, and then they go back to modern New York before they get stuck in the past or change history or something.

It was a fun book as I recall, but I can’t remember the title or author. It may have been published by Scholastic Press or a similar publisher of books for schools.

My search-fu is failing me. Can a Doper help me out? Thanks in advance!

No ideas, though when I saw the thread title I immediately thought of the short story ‘Uptown Local’ by Diane Duane - even though that was more alternate universes than strict time travel. It sounds vaguely like something that Duane might have written, but probably not.

I’d be interested in checking it out if you find it - mostly to find out how they catch a subway to wish their way home from New Amsterdam.

ZOMG!! One hour and 14 minutes. The SDMB is amazing! Thank you, Andy L!

BTW, if you have a love for Urban-kids-in-NYC who encounter the magical, mystical, and time travel-ical, check out Ruth Chew.

I remember that story, but not the title. One of the few things I recall is when the kids asked for a fork during dinner with the settlers and their hosts mock them for wanting something not even the governor had.

Another good time-travel train story is The Third Level by Jack Finney.

Glad to help - would have been quicker if I got up earlier today!
