I’m talking about Discovery Channels “Deadiest Catch”. Anybody watching?
Are you ever going to look at Crab the same again?
I worked King Crab at the Star of Kodiak in 1980. Drove my 1971 VW camper bus on the trusty tusty with aspirations of working on a boat as a cook. Never happen but I did get to run the King Crab line at the processing plant. King Crab legs longer than my arm! I’ll never forget my sister cracking a KC leg in the front seat of my bus and watching the juice fly on my wall to wall shag carpeting. We had crabs coming out of our ears.
Being in the bus with no fridge or butter or lettuce the sweet tasting crab was good to a point. So I took the crab legs that had fallen on the floor which the cannery was just going to open these huge garbage disposal lids on the floor so whoever stayed for clean-up (me!) squeegeed the claws & legs into a homepack. It was the nightshift because it was easier to camp in the daylight. By the end of my shift I had a hundred pounds of the deadiest catch.
There was this small country kitchen that my sister and I had ate breakfast at while most of the time it was pb&j and top ramen that I knocked on her back door early when I could smell bacon frying. Asked her if she wanted some fresh king crab. Connie asked how much? I said you feed me and my sister breakfast, lunch & dinner while we’re here and its yours, with more where that came from while the season lasts.
We ate breakfast and went to sleep. Came back for dinner that night and there was a line outside the door. I knew the reason. Went around back to the kitchen door and Connie handed me & my sister a well packed lunch. This went on for the 3 week season.
I do want to point out that when they say on this show that they are using salmon for bait it is only the head & the tail. Its legal to use whole grey cod for bait, but no wanton waste of the salmon.
