Kindle Oasis

$300 really isn’t much for a high end hobby device. There are quite a lot of worse ways to spend $300 than if you’re an avid reader and really like the ergonomics.

I think the price is a bit high, but it will likely come down. I find that, as with phones and laptops, I don’t particularly get the whole “thinner is better” thing. Because the Oasis is so thin, it’s battery is not as good as previous Kindles, unless you attach the cover/base - which makes it a bit thicker.

I like the physical page buttons, but the “Pagepress” that Voyage has is good enough.

Is there an offer code or something? I might need a new paperwhite after the screen cracked on my current one. Although I’m going to look into repair options first - but in my limited experience, repairs of any sort usually end up costing about the same as the whole device.

As far as thinness - I think it’s more about the ergonomics about having the big chunk and rest as thin makes it easier to handle. Not sure if that’s actually the case, but it’s not just trying to shave 1mm off the size like phones do every year. As far as battery life goes - sure, maybe it’s only a month now instead of two, but is that really a big deal? It’s not like smartphones, where a smaller battery might mean it doesn’t last through the day.

There are quite a few older model ereaders floating around eBay these days. I recently bought a Sony ps-505 reader with a nice leather case for $30. Works perfectly.

The email had a link: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IOY8XWQ?ref_=pe_2457420_188245830_ods_em_eink_ie_pp_ssl

One suggestion regarding the odd shape vis-à-vis the price is that it’s supposed to be an prestige possession for the conspicous consumption folk. They want their friends so say “Oh, you have the Oasis! I am so envious.”

The odd shape is to make it more recognizable to others.

I.e., it’s an Apple product … from Amazon.

I’m still using my 3G Keyboard, complete with cover that has a built-in light to illuminate the screen. I don’t use it to read at night in the dark, because the brightness of the external LED annoys others. But I don’t understand why Amazon doesn’t release a new version of the Keyboard. I don’t really want just an e-ink reader without the keyboard and considering the price of the Oasis I could finally upgrade my first generation Fire.

Because touch screens can substitute as a keyboard during the rare occasions you need one without making the device twice as big.

That link goes to the Voyage, the previous “new” Kindle.

Huh, you’re right. I altered the link to remove personal identification stuf, and I deleted the email. Guess I screwed up…

What can I say? I like a physical keyboard.
