Kindle Skins

Are they worth it?

I’m looking on Amazon and there seem to be three main brands: DecalGirl, Skinit, and GelaSkins.
Some reviews say they’re a waste and are nothing but stickers, others say they’re great for protecting your Kindle.
I’d like to be able to keep crumbs and stuff from getting into the buttons, and it’s hard to tell if these do that. I was also hoping for a clear window to cover the screen itself, but from what I can tell there’s basically just a rectangular hole.

While writing this, I also found the Marware SportGrip, which seems more like what I was looking for, but it also doesn’t appear to cover the buttons or screen.

Any advice?

I’ve got one of the DecalGirl ones, and I like it. I bought it mainly to keep superficial scratches off the plastic back and such, and because I really liked the design. I don’t really know if it offers a great deal of protection, but I do think it’ll help for slight scratches and scuffs. (It’s a lot like the contact paper you can put down for shelves or home “laminating,” that same sort of thickness.)

My skin has precision cut holes around the buttons and screen, so it won’t keep stuff from getting in there. That said, there’s really not a lot of space between the housing and the buttons, at least not on my Kindle. (That’s a concern that never really occurred to me, honestly.)

I don’t have a screen protector for my Kindle, but I know that you can buy them.

I’d probably consider the DecalGirl and SkinIT skins to be primarily for decoration, with an additional bonus of giving you some protection (but not much). I’ve got one of the padded MWave covers/pouch thingies that I slip my Kindle into that gives much better protection.

I have three DecalGirl skins for my iPod Touch, including one that’s design is a photo of my cat, and one for my 17" laptop. I love the designs, and they are a bit thicker than just a sticker. No scratches is worth the relatively low cost.
