I can’t find anything by Google to suggest other people are getting this problem - since my Kindle 2 updated, I keep getting random sentences in books “highlighted”, you know, as if I had highlighted them. I know there’s some sort of crowdsourced popular highlights thing I can ask for in the menu - I haven’t asked for that. I don’t care what the crowd thinks about anything I’m reading. And I can’t find a way to turn it off!
So, what’s going on?
And is there a way to clear all highlights? They’re distracting and I hate them.
To turn Popular Highlights on and off:
-Navigate to Kindle’s Home screen and press the Menu button.
-Select “Settings.”
-Select the desired option next to “Popular Highlights.”
I followed these steps, and it seems Popular Highlights was turned on by default. I’ve changed that now, and I am hoping it has solved the problem.
I am assuming it is the popular highlights feature you are seeing. It is on by default. To turn it off:
From Home screen press the Menu button.
Select Settings then choose turn off under “Popular Highlights.”
Anything and everything you want to know about the Kindle can be found in the forums area at www.kindleboards.com. Amazon’s Kindle forum doesn’t hold a candle to it.
My Kindle 3 says something like “74 highlighters” next to the highlighted passage, which makes it pretty clear what’s going on. At least to me, since this “see what other readers have highlighted” was one of the features that was advertised for the Kindle.
Yeah, it was advertised for the Kindle if you just bought one. I bought mine more than a year ago; it’s a new feature in the latest upgrade. And no thank you.
Why on earth can’t I turn it off when I’m in a particular book? It doesn’t occur to me to try the “menu” button on the home screen. Sigh. Thanks, though - much better.
Is there anybody who really wants to see what other users have highlighted, by the way? Really? Please keep your deep and personal thoughts about the latest Elizabeth George book to yourself.
I don’t mind them being on. If I see a sentence highlighted by forty people I may pay a bit more attention to it, to either agree that it was important or disagree with the others. On the three it isn’t obtrusive so it doesn’t hurt having it on.
