King George Steinbrenner abdicates his throne

I heard this on ESPN’s PTI today. MSNBC story here

It seems the statement was The Boss’ last public act as the Yankees’ owner. One week after he spoke to a reporter at length and on the record for the first time in a year or more, word came down from the Yankee bunker in Tampa that Steinbrenner was no longer running the team. His sons, Hank and Hal, would take over; George would become “like the chairman of a major corporation,’ The Post reported, quoting team President Randy Levine.

I sure didn’t see this coming. Any thoughts?

I briefly saw something about this today and wonder if it’s related or what the impact is on his statement that Torre would be fired if they didn’t beat the Indians.

I’m not surprised. There have been rumors for at least a year that Steinbrenner has Alzheimer’s or some form of dementia (clinical and serious, not a bunch of cheap-shot jokes). This report from last month indicates the rumors are probably true.

This looks like it is only making official something that was decided when Swindal screwed up.

As a Yankee fan, this was the biggest thing in the article.

While Torre’s future remains in doubt, it appears young pitcher Joba Chamberlain will be joining the Yankees starting rotation come spring training.

This means Rivera will get any amount of money he asks for.
