King Kev back on Tyneside (football)

Wor Kevin back to the toon man!
The happy smiley is for Newcastle being a joke club, but in the true sense of the word. The geordies have a cheerful sentimentality that puts a smile on your face, in the way that, say, Liverpool fans do not. I think there really was something to their rejection of the Allardyce brand of football. They haven’t won anything since God was a kid, but still cannae tolerate the winning-ugly brand of football that a lot of prem clubs play.

Kevin Keegan though :smack: I like the guy but he’s completely past it. For such a heart on the sleeve, plain speaker he always strikes me as being quite introspective. His last year at City he looked like he was on death row - totally burned out with the game. The prem is no place for fairy tales these days, alas. A fatuous, pandering chairman + fragile, tactically inept manager = trouble brewing in the toon.

  • entertainment for the neutrals

Yes, I like Newcastle but I can’t see why they’re getting excited about this. Keegan never won anything with NUFC as a player or a manager, and there is no reason whatsoever to expect the exitement of the 95/96 season to happen again because of him. Anyway, IMO Keegan blew it for them that season by signing Asprilla - the team wasn’t broken so it didn’t need fixing. There was so much hype and expectation about his signing, with him in the team they never had the consistency they had before.
