Kingdom of Loathing for the Dope

Yes, I know there are KoL forums, but I don’t want to make an account there and I think there are enough Dopers playing the game to make the thread lively.

First of all, I’ve got a couple of questions regarding stat days*: Is it worth it to save up a bunch of adventures for your main stat days in general? How about when you’re doing just fine in combat as a level 8-10? Should you always save things like moxie weeds and strength elixirs for their stat days, or only in certain circumstances?

Feel free to post your own questions/discussions!

*Stat day: characters in the Kingdom of Loathing have three major statistics, as RPGs tend to do. Characters level up (and thus have more opportunities) as their main stat increases. You gain stats by various means, most often fighting monsters; what actually happens is that you gain points in the substat, and when that fills up, you gain a stat point in that area, and the (slightly larger) substat bar empties again. For example, if I have 45/51 Wizardliness and I gain 7 Mysteriousness (different name, same function), my Mysticality goes from 25 to 26, and Wizardliness now fills up at 53 instead. Some days give benefits to certain stat gains: a Mysticality day will award half again as many Mysticality substat points, which is a good thing especially if your character’s main stat is Mysticality, allowing him/her to level up more quickly.

I’m not sure if posting a link is appropriate, given the board rules, but it’s easy enough to find through Google or Wikipedia.

I wouldn’t bother saving moxie weeds or strength elixirs for stat days; their effects are relatively minor enough that it wouldn’t seem worth the effort to me (unless you are completely trying to min/max or are trying for the leaderboards or something).

I save the stat script, bonedragon chest and strange leaflet magic word for stat days but that’s usually it. Sometimes I save gourd potions for them, sometimes I don’t.

I probably should save the ascension rewards for then but I’m usually too eager to get past the first few levels and just go ahead and use them. I suppose I could wait to ascend on a stat day, but I’m not in the leaderboard race so it really doesn’t matter too much to me.

All this IMHO, of course.

Whether or not to bank turns for stat days depend on your goals and what path you’re on. On your first or second cycle through the game, stat days aren’t as critical as they are for players following the Oxygenarian path, powerleveling or doing back-to-back speed runs. For casual players they’re a nice perk, but it isn’t critical to maximize them. Oxygenarians, of course, will save all their turns for stat days, powerlevelers will bank enough turns to have 200 after rollover, and speed ascenders will tailor their choice of classes to the phases of the moon.

Past level 5, it’s probably more efficient to sell off moxie weeds and the like then buy elemental wads in the mall. The cost isn’t much higher, the stat gains are similar and they give you an adventure. What’s not to like?

There’s at least one clan of Dopers (Friends of Cecil) but it’s been rather quiet lately.

What are you all yammering on about exactly? Sounds like a parodic MMORPG.

[Wikipedia is my friend] Yep nailed it. Mildly intriguing…

Holy Crap! Level 8 Vermicelli Enchanter (Pastamancer), 65/95/57 (with various items, stench wad and Springy Fusilli; base 51/65/49), attacked with the staff that the leet Trapzor gives you twice, with 13 HP left, decided to go for broke even though the Bonerdagon blocks skills more often than attacks. Cast Cone of Something for 50 damage. Killed him. Got the skull and chest. Dude! How the hell did I get him with 57 moxie?

Without this thread, there’s no way I would’ve beaten him. The stench wad helped me immensely. Thank you, Nekosoft! Also, since I used the stench wad as the cheapest way to increase the stats I needed, I got +10 stench damage, without which I could not have gotten him, as that is one of his weaknesses and I got ~20 stench damage the first two turns. Question: if it says 21(+20) damage, does that mean 21 damage total, taking the stench damage into account, or 21 melee and 20 stench?

Also, since tomorrow is a Mysticality day, should I wait until then to open the chest, since it gives stat points, or is it not affected?

I also just took out the Goblin King with one hit, as a Cone of Something for 55 damage. No quests except the Doc’s left for now! Duuude! This is freaking awesome! Thanks again, guys!

(Yeah, I know, but I’ve been working on these for a while now, and it’s great to finish them.)

You’re playing a myst character, and tomorrow is a myst day? Definitely save the bonerdagon chest until tomorrow!

(I don’t generally save moxie weed, jugs of magicalness, or even bonerdagon chests unless the appropriate stat day is close. It’s a trade-off between the stat bonus and the length of the run, imho.)

That’s 21 melee PLUS 20 stench. Yay!

Ahhh… That would be how I beat him. I think I got about 40 stench damage the first two rounds, and without that, I would have died. Actually, I would have died without any number of things, but this was a major factor.

Also, happy rollover in an hour! (why did it take so much longer than usual even for a Saturday yesterday? I thought it was supposed to be ~30 minutes during the week and ~60 on Saturdays.)

Heh. I have +40 on myst. 105 (65). +5 extreme scarf, +7 chrome staff, +3 shiny ring, +5 badass belt, +30% Stenchtastic.

Okay, just beat the Bonerdagon with my Caribou Smacker 102/78/71, using the simple principle of ‘maximize damage to him, and your initial HP’. Since there won’t be another Muscle day for about two weeks, is it worth it to wait till then to open the chest?

It depends (you knew that was coming, didn’t you?) If you’re a myst character (you’re running a pastamancer, yes?) by all means open the chest today.

If you’re a muscle character – and you expect your run to take more than two more weeks – go ahead and wait. Seems like a long time to wait for the stat and meat reward, though!

Sorry for the sequential posts, but I keep doing more stuff.

Helpful wad tip: Take one wad each of two different kinds. You’ll get the effects from both, which will boost your stats doubly. With one hot and one stench, I go from 67/56/71 to 94/75/92 and killed the Bonerdagon in two rounds. I know waiting for Moxie is worth it, because it’s in two or three days.

All these characters are softcore, I’m guessing. Do you know about the buffbots, Cap? As long as you’re out of Ronin, which you must be if you’re buying wads (or if these characters haven’t ascended), they’re an invaluable asset. Basically, for a nominal fee they’ll give you a day’s worth of turns of any of the many, many buffs in the game. So if you need the extra stats to beat a boss, you can pick up Madrigal and Shanty of Superiority; if you need extra meat you can get Polka of Plenty, etc. These babies are almost game-breaking in their scope:

As far as the topic at hand, I generally don’t adjust for stat days other than to try to ascend in the right class for the upcoming moon phases. Then again, the importance of holding stuff until stat days depends rather heavily on how fast you’re going. What else, what else… I don’t know. If you feel like throwing a player ID # up here I can take a look at it and see if anything pops out at me (what familiars are you using, for instance?) Not that I’m so great, but I’ve at least been playing for awhile.

I joined the game last night and played today. It’s the type of game I like. The humor is much like the “Kingdom of Magic” I played years ago. I’m not going to read these posts closely as I’m not looking for spoilers. I’m just dropping a note of this is a great game, thanks for acidental game plug.
