Kings Go Forth

I watched the 1958 movie Kings Go Forth last night. Natalie Wood is the second most White Girl I can imagine, Doris Day being first only because she is blond.
An interesting movie, seemingly racist given that it is fifty years old. The New York Times review says people applauded when Tony Curtis was shot by the Germans.
Was racism that prevalent in even Philadelphia in 1944?
