The question wasn’t “Who has the better spaceship,” it was “Who was the better captain.” Sheridan, by the end of his series, was President of the Earth-Mimbar alliance and had the resources of both interstellar nations at his disposal. Mal was a smuggler with a second-hand freighter. So, yes, advantage to the guy in command of a space navy.
But all else being equal, I’d give the edge to Mal. Because he’s, you know… cooler.

The Kirk vs Picard debate is absurd. It must be a thing among STAR TREK fans who are not Sci-fi fans.
Kirk was SIXTIES. Compare Kirk and Spock to Napolean Solo and Ilya Kuriyakin in THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.
I don’t doubt that the captains on capital navy ships are more like Picard than Kirk.
