In another thread in which I opined that A Fairytale of New York is the best Christmas song, mattk posted some sad news. Kirsty MacColl, who was half of the song’s duet, died after being hit by a boat.

godDAMN…
Damn damn damn
Well, at least I still have her on videotape singing “A Fairytale of New York” with the Pogues
The only work of hers I know is her collaboration with The Pogues on “Red, Hot & Blue” doing “Miss Otis Regrets” and “It Was Just One Of Those Things.” Good cuts, both. How sad.
Esprix
Hit by a boat? Jesus.
How weird . . . I was just listening to a CD I put together that includes Tracey Ullman’s version of “They Don’t Know” when I saw this thread . . .
That totally sucks. She was an excellent songwriter.
Darling
While the firelight is low
I’m disappearing
Like the last of the snow
And really it’s better this way
We both know it’s over
And we’ll never pass this way again
Sunshine and the desert call to me
And you know moonshine
Makes you so blind you can’t see at all
But whatever you feel
It may not be real
And baby we’ll never pass this way again
I’m not the only love you’ll ever know
Look to the stars above and wish it so
Let me go
From We’ll Never Pass This Way Again
I don’t even know what to say. Kirsty was an amazing singer. She will be missed…
Damn.
One of my favorite albums is her Greatest Hits package “Galore”. I guess I’ll go home and listen to it tonight

Johnny, on behalf of the vast majority of the SDMB board, please allow me to be the first to say…
“Who!?”.
Crud.
I only have If I Should Fall from Grace With God. Did like that song. Does Bottle of Smoke know about this?
Whenever I’d beat my buddy at cards, he’d say:
“You scumbag, you maggot.
You cheap lousy faggot.”
sigh [sub]softly sings: “The boys of the NYPD choir were singing Galway Bay…”[/sub]
Yeah, I heard about it when matt posted to Johnny’s Fairytale thread. All I can say is Damn. I really loved her voice on that song – she made the whole thing work.
But more than anything, I feel terrible for her kids. Jesus – hit by a boat in a swimming area while her kids were in the water with her?!
Damn, Exprix, I thought I was the only one that had that CD.
Nope. I mentioned it in the other thread before I started this one! I also taped the show when it aired.
She was one of my favorites. I interviewed her, twice, for a radio show. I have pretty much all of everything she released, most of it signed.
This really bums me out. First Jeff Buckley, now Kirsty. Two of the best songwriters of the century.

Tell me about it. That’s like getting run over by an elevator.
Playing Fairytale of New York right now.
How sad. And what a great voice.
… and the bells where ringing out for Christmas Day.
A fine singer-songwriter, and daughter of Scottish folk legend Ewan MacColl. She’ll be missed
