Kiss 'em Goodbye -- The Desperate Housewives Finale

Every Sunday night for the last eight years I have sat down to join my friends of Wisteria Lane. Some storylines were better then others, some were downright stupid. (remember the crazy pharmacist Bree was engaged to, or that daughter of Tom’s that was such a little brat?) But at it’s best DH had a perfect blend of Dramedy worthy of MASH.
The final episode was no exception.

Even if somewhat predictable (A birth! a death! a wedding! Never saw THAT on a series finale before!) It also had some really great twists McCluskey confessing to killing Alejandro to get Bree off the hook!
And some bittersweet moments that made you smile and cry (Johnny Mathis, anyone?)
Not to mention the fact that The Scavos are FINALLY BACK TOGETHER!! And that everyone pretty much lives happily ever after.

All in all, I really enjoyed this finale. & I enjoyed this series. It’s been one of my favorites. As Karen said, they cared about each other.

I’ll miss them.

Hated that Tom and Lynetter got back together. wrong, just wrong.

I was hoping they would all get run over by a truck. Probably driven by Susan. And I’m supposed to believe Bree had a husband still alive a few years later? Did you see all the people who died on that street? Those people are awful. McCluskey’s the only one I wanted to see survive.

Wow, guys, cynical much?

I liked it, but then I like shows that end on an upnote. Also, I really liked the way they had that person move into Susan’s house at the end…with a secret. I almost wish they had some sort of a preview to show that sort of crazy she would be up to in the coming months.
It was nice to know that as each one of our families left they were replaced with someone equally messed up. The drama didn’t stop with them.

Also, when we saw all the dead people, who was that first dead guy with the giant grin. I couldn’t place him.

To think, I was sitting here trying to guess who would go to jail or get killed or lose their job. I was glad everything more or less worked out for everyone, though I would have liked to see Carlos (or Gabby) get in at least some trouble for Alejandro. Just enough that all the people that thought Bree was a murderer would understand what a terrible person he was. They really only scratched the surface of that plot line a while back. Also, I’m surprised that even though she got off on murder, they never asked her about why she still appeared to have been moving the body.

I wondered who the kid was with McCluskey.

No idea, but here’s the clip.

Here’s a list of people that died throughout the show. I’m still looking for a list of people that watched Susan as she left.

The only kid (male) I see on the list is Patrick Scavo, Paige’s twin that died in utero.

Wasn’t there a flashback story line many seasons back, where Mrs. McCluskey had a son a who died a long time ago (not a current death, but pre-Wisteria era)? That’s who I thought the child was, standing beside her in the final scene.

Wiki confirms that she had a son that died at 12. I’m not sure if these are all supposed to be people that we saw die on the show.
Give it a day or two and I’m sure someone will show up with a listing of who they all are. About half of them are pretty straight forward, but some of them are kinda tough.

Also, just for kicks, here’s the Colombian version of the pilot. Pretty much the same as ours except Sofia Vergara plays Mary Alice.

Also, since I always forget to mention while the show was running, did anyone else ever notice that Mary Alice seem to start every sentence with the word “Yes”?

I was fine with how it all turned out, except that I hated Tom and Lynette getting back together.

I liked McCluskey confessing.

I like the very end where the new woman moving into Susan’s house had a box of secrets. I kind of want there to be a show starring her and her box of secrets.

I thought the ending, with the new woman’s box of secrets, was perfect.

The dead-people montage, not bad but a bit cheesy.

Everyone’s happily-ever-afters a bit too pat, but probably to be expected.

The wedding-birth drama, trite; the death, well-done.

I thought the way the DA handled McCluskey’s confession was strange. Since McCluskey didn’t discredit Renee, I would have expected the DA to press the case, ignore her confession as being demented or something, and go to the jury with the credible evidence that Bree had buried a body.

What DIDN’T happen, but I had expected it, was that I thought that once it was proven that the dead guy was Gabby’s step-father, it would call into question the fact that Bree’s address was on the map - remember, the cops faked that themselves, I expected the lawyer to pounce on that.

All in all, the final voice-over made the wrap-up work out perfectly, to me.

That was Roger Bart, who played the pharmacist (George, I think?) who overdosed Bree’s first husband Rex (who had a legitimate heart condition) on potassium, which caused him to die of a heart attack. He was in love with Bree, and Bree eventually agreed to marry him before finding out that he had killed her husband. He took sleeping pills in a fake suicide attempt to win back Bree’s sympathy and love, but Bree just let him die.

So he was there, I also saw Rex and Carl. Lot’s or Bree’s exes in the crowd.

Yes indeed. Also Chuck the cop, the most recent addition to the “romance-Bree-and-die” club.

Mostly good but after Carlo’s big deal about helping people and turning their lives upside down, he suddenly goes off to live in a mansion with Gaby and the kids?

Also, they could have brought back Bree’s son to show a snippet of his life.

Not sure if I bought into the Tom and Lynette ending - seriously? NYC and kids in Central Park? They couldn’t keep their act together in tiny town, I hardly think they would take Manhattan by storm.

Still - wrapped up OK, but was really expecting a few more fun surprises…sort of all ho-hum and yada yada yada.

I was surprised by that as well. The way I see it, that can really only play out in one of three ways:
1)They go back to the way they were at the beginning of the series. Always at each others throats, but Lynette rules the marriage and Tom ultimately does what she wants him to do. He has to find a way to be okay with that. It worked for them for however long it had been until things started getting wonky with them. Around the time he opened the pizza place and she micromanaged it right into the ground.

2)They have their ups and downs and continue they way things have been going for the last two seasons or so. Neither of them are really ever happy again.

3)They finalize the divorce and finally go their separate ways. Lynette finds someone that can ‘love her for who she is’.

For the happily ever after story, the most likely scenario is #1 IMO. It gives us our original Tom and Lynette back. The couple we knew at the beginning. When all hell was breaking loose on the Lane, they were our rock. If Tom can be okay with her running a business, working 80 hours a week, bringing her work home with her, treating the marriage like a business, they’ll be fine. She’s (I’m sure) in heaven. He has to decide if he wants to join her there.

I am gonna need to increase my Netflix subscription, get better drugs prescribed, or maybe help care for my new baby granddaughter due in August to help me get over my serious TV addiction.

With Desperate Housewives AND House both ending this season, I’m in a world of hurt!

The new lady moving into Susan’s house? That box she put in the garage cabinet is probably her husband, Steve’s ashes.
