I’m hoping you guys can help settle an argument. It’s about the song “Kissed by a Rose” by Seal.
Is it “Kissed by a rose on the grey” or “grave”.
It’s going to drive me crazy until I get an answer!
Grave. From my memory and from here.
However, further googling is predominately coming up with “grey.”
I’ll have to check my cassette tape insert when I get home.
The answer is that Seal never said one way or the other. IIRC, when they asked Seal why he didn’t include lyrics with the albums/CDs, he said that it didn’t matter what the lyrics he sang were, what mattered was what you heard and how you reacted to that.
Guess he liked Louie, Louie. 
Most people hear “grave.” He claims he’s singing grey which makes a lot less sense than grave. Though he doesn’t include the lyrics with the cds, the last time this came up I looked and they were on his official site…where it does indeed say “grey.” (At the moment you can’t even get to the albums on his site, and a blog comes up instead.)
He is singing a lot about light and darkness. Maybe that’s where the “grey” is relevant.
I’ve always heard it as “brain”.
Having listened to this part in the song about five times… it’s hard to say, but I keep hearing “gray”.
He talks about “a graying tower along by the sea”, maybe that has something to do with it?
Work this one out then?

I always heard ‘gray’. Never knew what it meant, but ‘grave’ never even occurred to me.
It’s actually “glaive.” The song was originally written for a never-produced Krull sequel.
I always thought it was funny how Seal reached into his Grab Bag o’ Emotive Imagery and pulled out a threefer. How, he wondered, am I supposed to fit a kiss, a rose, and a grave all into one line?
I always heard “grave”. That, of course, doesn’t mean that’s what he sang.
The song seemed very Annabel Lee-ish to me, which probably is why “grave” made sense.
I’ve heard “grey” more than “grave”.
Incidentally, the song title is Kiss From A Rose.
I heard grey and assumed it meant the tower. I think this was partially due to some imagery in the music video.
Hmm, looking at the video ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ateQQc-AgEM ) I think I assumed that Seal is standing on the grey tower with the bat signal.
He clearly said “blaaaive,” which, as you know, means to bluff!

BTW, this is why I remembered that bit from Lolita–Humbert Humbert’s childhood sweetheart was an Annabelle Leigh in a “Kingdom by the Sea.”

I think we can say, take it the way you hear it. I would think it would be grey because he cannot decipher if his love for her is a black or white situation because the love he has for her is like a drug & the way it effects him, he wants her to tell him it is right.
