Kissing Toddlers on the Lips

My eldest daughter doesn’t kiss on the lips, and pretty much never has. She’s always been more of a cheek kisser. She may have planted a few on my lips in the past; it’s no big. She’s now 10 and wouldn’t dream of kissing me on the lips.

My six-year-old daughter loves to kiss me on the lips. I allow it unless she, or I, is sick. Closed mouth, natch.

I figure either she’ll stop doing it or she won’t. No one else in the family kisses on the lips, except spouses to one another, but it’s not like we’ve all set some rule or something. And I don’t find it creepy, just different than what the rest of us do. I’d feel weird putting connotations on it myself that my kids obviously never intended. THAT would be the creepy part.

My nieces (3 and 7) sometimes go for the lip kiss. I doesn’t make me feel weird, just gross, in a slimy wet smooch kind of way.

I find it icky, because kids are little germ factories. But it’s not nearly as bad as letting a dog lick your face. The dog isn’t going to make you sick as often, but to be covered in spit like that, ack. As for creepy, it’s not unless the parent is encouraging the placement of the kisses.
