Kittens

I strongly believe Belgians, left-handed people, and those who misuse apostrophes should get the hell out of the United States. And kittens and puppies should be deep-fried and sold as snacks at state fairs. (joke explained at link below if anyone cares, which they probably don’t)

Oh, hey, Coldfire, I didn’t knowingly post false information. I made a mistake and admitted to it. But thanks for assuming that I skipped the member agreement when you must have skipped the repeated times I admitted in that thread that I made a mistake.

Explaination – http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=201274

Reckon that counts as “Coldie is a Nazi?”

What about those who mis-spell apostropy?

Does this count towards Coldfire’s Pit Threads Tally?

No more tallies, Guinnie. Too much food for the trolls.

Sorry, no, you didn’t explain. Is it a dipping sauce or a marinade for the kitty-cutlets and the doggie-dolmades?

Dipping sauce. This be the Iowa State Fair. We don’t cotton to no fancy marinades.

Rooves, people who mispell apostrophy have to face the wrath of an angry hispanic shut-in named Luis. He’ll have to mail you the wrath though, or you have to go to his base of operations (his parents’ basement). The choice is yours.

No, but you knowingly posted information which could have easily been verified if you had put a single iota of effort into doing so.

“Fighting Ignorance” also entails teaching other people not only truth, but how to AVOID being ignorant. “Feed a man a fish, teach a man to fish,” and all that.

So you admit I didn’t knowingly post false information. Screwing up on accident and intentially lying are different things. If the Moderaters want to publicly insult a new member, let them direct the other members to hate me for the right reasons. Just doing my part to fight ignorance. We’re delightfully altruistic!

Let’s compare two different scenarios. Here’s the Bizzaro Alternate Universe Scenario:

LudditeAndroid: “Hey, I never said this!”–Some guy, April 31, in the year 2525

SomeDopers: You know, those quotes aren’t accurate. It’s a good idea to check things like that, and pretty easy.

LudditeAndroid: Wow, I never thought to doubt the source. Guess I’ll know better next time.

SomeDopers: No sweat, dude, that’s what we’re here for.
Notice a distinct absence of moderator participation.

Now, for an even more bizzare experience, compare that with what actually happened. Notice that the difference isn’t the OP, or in the fact that some of the quotes were debunked. Notice that, as part of the overly defensive reaction to being corrected about the quotes (hint–this is where the trouble started), the original poster suggests that he did, indeed, knowingly post inaccurate information as “flame bait.” Note also that no mods have instructed anyone to hate anyone.

Do you hear a sort of whistling sound? That’s the point, just flying right by you. Several people have tried to give it to you, but your magic force field, which seems to be composed of equal parts of defensive self-righteousness and poor reading comprehension, is reliably deflecting it.

If you’d have done a simple search you would know that the proper saying is “Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime”—Author unknown.

-or-

"Build a man a fire keep him warm for a day, set him on fire keep him warm for life "-Reverand crackwhore

Now, what did you really add in the fight of ignorance by being ignorant yourself? What you “Pitters” do is reverse-troll in the form of a big pile on of condescending remarks toward other people.

You’re not adding anything to the discussion if your being an asshole for the sake of being an asshole thinly disqused as a “teacher”.

Let me just interject here with some fellow feeling.

LudditeAndriod (I dig the name a LOT), on this board we have very high standards for the veracity of claims, maybe especially in rants in the Pit. If you post something false you’ll certainly get called on it (God knows) whether it was done intentionally or not.

Heck, posting a rant without adequately checking your sources is one of the surest ways to make people call you on it. It’s not as bad as lying (a sin of commission) but we’re not all that easygoing on sins of omission, either.

The solution to this is to make sure of your facts before you start slamming something in the Pit. That level of proof and effort is one of the things that makes the SDMB one of the finest places on the Internet.

So please don’t take it personally. This is a great place and all people of good intent are welcomed here. But remember that the standards are higher here than on almost every other message board in the world.

Oh, and guys? Let’s give him a pass here.

Nothing good can come of this.

cite please?

I do often doubt sources, but, as I stated previously (remember reading comprehension?) I’d seen all those quotes posted at several other boards in the past, and never seen them debunked before, so I thought they were for real. I fucked up. I admitted I fucked up. Lay off already.

Coldfire may not have specifically directed people to hate me, but he implied that I was knowingly lying, which is a detestable trait. When a moderator, in a position of authority and well-known by the regulars here, says a new person here is knowingly lying, who are you going to believe? Me or Coldfire?

Go ahead and set me up as the perpetual propoganda-believer enemy of rationality if that makes you feel better. Surely, if I make a mistake with my first OP here, I must be lectured until I beg for forgiveness from anonymous self-proclaimed bastions of rationality.

This board needs laxative.

That last reply was the Bren. Thanks for being funny and less uptight, Rooves and Chance.

Also, LudditeAndroid, keep in mind that just because a moderator berated you doesn’t mean that he did it in his function as a moderator. Generally, if a moderator is handing out an official decree they note that they are acting in their function as a moderator. Otherwise, they are just the same as another poster, so don’t take any special offense.

Well, sort of. There have been issues. But it’s a good rule of thumb.

Well, the beginning of the post in which Coldfire implied I was knowingly lying started with the title “Moderator Notes” so I assumed he was speaking as a moderator.

On second thought, the entire board doesn’t need laxative. Some will be given laxative. Others will be given funnel cakes and kitten dippin’ sauce. Either way, the porta-potties will be the inevitible common ground afterwards.

Oh wait. I didn’t see the Moderator Notes on Coldie’s post. My mistake. My advice still stands, it’s just not applicable in this case.

Cool. Then the post wasn’t a complete waste . . .
