Wheeeee yarnie Christmas! My father-in-law made me a (beautiful, oak) skein winder, my dad made me (gorgeous, maple) sock blockers, I got a ball winder, and Knitpicks Harmony Options. Wheee! And a new kacha-kacha (row counter) and some anti-stress gloves.
No yarn, though. Hmm.
What’d you ladies (and gentlemen) get? Any malabrigo, a new wheel, maybe a tensioned lazy kate?
Heretic here: Santa brought me a How to Crochet book, a skein of lovely yarn, and a hook.
Last year he brought me a How to Knit book and I just could NOT figure it out.
Next year I think he’s going to say screw it and buy me the needlepoint stuff I’ve been wanting.
(I want to learn something less space consuming and putzy. I love cross stitch, needlepoint, and hardanger, but they’re not as useful as knowing how to knit or crochet)
Tomorrow I’m going to the yarn store though, for their semi-annual sale. It’s the only place I don’t mind going on boxing day. It’s busy, but we manage to keep it sane. We’ll see what I can find, I had a plan/projects in mind last sale but not so much this one.
Nothing fabric-arts related for me. We agreed that our gift to each other this year was the puppy. So unless you count the theoretical possibility of spinning the shed dog fur into yarn (which would make…well, a really smelly sweater when it got wet), it was a yarnless Christmas.
I got a knitting bag. I’m still not sure about it (it’s massive, and has no zipper, the one thing I did ask for) but it’s certainly nicer than the beat up old briefcase I was using
The in-laws are always remarkably generous on the cash front. Since it was my mother-in-law who bought me the stuff to go from one hideous Lion Brand Thick’n’Quick garter stitch scarf to actual knitting with increases and decreases and so on, I am going to assume when they say ‘buy something special’ they mean… YARRRRRRN.
Actually… really don’t need any yarn… just have the usual ooh yummy lust goin’ on. I already have a ball winder and swift (currently on loan to someone… must get those back) any other suggestions for yarn toys I need?
I got a card to Joann’s. I don’t even know how much money is on the card and I don’t care. I can always find something I want there. We don’t have any local/specialty yarn stores so I guess I don’t know what I’m missing, eh?
Don’t tell me. I can’t want it if I don’t know it exists.
Every knitter I know gasps when I comment on trying to (again) learn how to chochet. The usual “Once you go knit, you never go back” or asking why I don’t enjoy the feel of two long rods in my hand versus one small hooked one, you know.
I’ve read through the crochet book. Managed to do a starting chain. Yeah. That’s about it. Cannot figure out even a simple single crochet. I am lame.
I think I need to go to Stitchville USA and sate my need for handiwork.
It sucks, really. If I may say so myself, I needlework like a pro. Hardanger like a natural. Blend floss like it’s been spun. Ribbon work? No problem. How can one friggin hook and one friggin ball of yarn frustrate me so?
I received a lovely skein of Noro Silk Garden and a carved wooden crochet hook from my Secret Santa on another message board. I also received $150 from MIL to “spend as I please”…so that will be at the yarn store.
Today we go to my folks for Christmas…my mom and sister are both yarnies. I’m pretty sure I’m getting some double points from my mom as she was asking what sized I have a already. I post back later.
My family must never know how much I spend on “good” yarn. Therefore, I ask for practical things and ensure that they stay far away from yarn shops.
My mom bought books for practically everyone this year, and she opted for knitting fun, picking out an excellent treasury of sock patterns for me. I may owe her a pair of socks now!
My more knitterly Christmas came from Ravelry. I’m in a group about my college, and some of the alumni in the group organized an undergrad care package event, and my amazing partner sent me some beautiful Socks That Rock and Malabrigo Sock and a bunch of little Soak and Eucalan packets in just about every scent imaginable.
Between the sock yarn and the sock book, I’ll be having fun.
I recieved a hand spindle and a big load of wool ready to be spun, and a book showing me how to do it, so wish me luck!
I also got a book on how to knit dolls of famous icons. I think I will begin with Bob Dylan.
I’ve been polycraftual since I was a girl (mainly crochet, sewing and cross-stitch) and didn’t start knitting seriously until recently. It’s interesting trying to crochet a pattern though, I’m teaching myself how to do that since my crochet experience is mainly Grandma showing me how to do something (mainly granny squares) and saying ‘make a bunch of these’ then we put them together.
I got myself some nice merino sock yarn and a skein of Handmaiden’s Casbah at the store today… that was about all my budget could take.
Well, I have crocheted since I was around 6 yo. I recently started knitting (about 2 yrs ago). I still crochet. Depends on what I’m making.
I just got home from my Christmas as my folks…I received a set of rosewook double points (sz 7), two skeins of Debbie Bliss pure silk, in dark purple (my fav color) and a pottery jar thingy you put your ball of yarn in and pull the yarn through a hole to keep it from rolling away. Ooh, and a $40 gift certificate to my favorite lys.
Oh! Someone I can talk about hardanger with! I’ll have to take issue with hardanger not being as useful as knitting. Knitting makes clothing. Hardanger makes heirlooms. I’m on the second year of work on a table cloth–I expect it will take another two. But with care it will last many lifetimes.
That said, I love knitting (I’m making my first socks at the moment). I got the book **Sensational Knitted Socks ** (Charlene Schurch) for Christmas (after much hinting). I finished the class sock last night and balled up my Knit One Crochet Too Ty Dy Sock Yarn. http://www.shopatron.com/product/part_number=YRNTS-1518/703.0.10895.36999.0.0.0
So sometime after breakfast, I’ll put the hardanger away and cast on. Yeee-ha!
Nuthin’, yet, but there’s still hope. Christmas got postponed 'til Jan 3 because several family members had weather/travel issues.
What do you think of the Harmony Options, GingerOfTheNorth? I love my Harmony dpns, but have the nickle-plated options (which I also love). I haven’t convinced myself that I actually need Harmony Options yet…
I haven’t tried them yet, but I’m sort of in love with them. AND they have excellent customer service! When I took them out of the package to show my father-in-law (a wood worker who appreciates craftsmanship), one of the tips’ bottoms fell off. I called the company, and they simply asked what the address is where they should send replacements. Super! The customer service rep said they have a half of one percent of the needles to which that happens.
