Warren Zevon. It sounded so plaintive and haunting when he did it that it’s always stuck in my head.
Until that point, though, Dylan.

Either Clapton or Dylan.
Dylan’s version. I try not to think of some of the other versions, period.
Guns ‘N’ Roses
GnR followed by Dylan as well
Clapton and Dylan morphing back and forth. If I think a little, I can hear GnR…then back to Clapton.
Danny and Dusty.
Chalk me up for Dylan again. While I like GnR (okay, only Appetite, really, but that was one balls-out rock record), I cannot stand what Axl did to this song.
GnR followed by…Adam Sandler.
Dylan
Warren Zevon’s voice has completely replaced Dylan’s, thank god. After’s hearing Zevon sing it on The Wind, I damn near cried.
Dylan, then Clapton…though I would love to hear the Zevon version sometime.
Knockin’ on Heaven’s doarwarrrrrr. GAH!
Ai.
Ai.
Ai.Ai.Ai.
Definitely Dylan, with a visual of Slim Pickens staggering off to a log.
Given that we just got a rock music station a few scant years ago, and no one bothering to teach me the good stuff, and it getting so much playtime on the pop station…Avril Lavigne. cry Make it stop! :smack:
(sometimes I hear it in a man’s voice, but I have no idea who that man is, probably Dylan, but it sounds more recent)
(waits for the flames)
Joining the crowd that can’t help but hear GnR.
I wonder if it’s age-related?
The only one I own a copy of, heard the most, and automatically think of, is the Warren Zevon version.
Is he the only one to sing this song who really was knockin’, and knew it at the time?
I believe that he is. Maybe that’s what lends it an additional poignancy for me.
As a side note (sorry for continuing this clandestine hijacking), regarding the countless covers of his songs, and dozens of hits others had with his songs, Dylan himself once remarked that Hendrix cover of “All along the watchtower” is the only one which is better than the original.
