Have you ever been reading a thread and notice a dropped clue about a poster’s general location? And just like that phenomenon that happens when you’re on vacation, the little light bulb goes ding in your head, and you wonder, since they live in the same state <insert here> that I do, if I actually might know them in real life?? Maybe, maybe, maybe.
Anyway, nutso as that sounds, I’ll stumble across something somewhere, be it a Doper get-together, a moving to Texas inquiry or some good ol’ Bush bashing thread and it makes me curious about the person behind the user name. It almost has me PMing people all over the place going “Who are you?” or “Exactly where are you from?”, “I just MIGHT know you!” Of course, not wanting to appear psychotic (or more so than I normally am) or stalker-ish or even outside the bounds of good propriety, I’ve never done that. Thank Og! But it does leave me with this question…
Does anyone else do that too? Have you pondered this mystery or am I alone? And certainly in my case, due to Texas being a big honkin’ state, my actually knowing anybody here IRL is probably slim to none. However, I guess we just can’t help doing that and gnawing on it like an old bone. Or rather, I can’t. I suppose it’s all relative on how nosy and interested one is.
That’s right, cue up the strains to Play Misty for Me.
Well…most of the dopers I’ve wondered about my possibly knowing I ended up not knowing but have now met as a result of the PhillyFests.
However,it seems that it might be possible that I know dantheman’s mother.
All right. All you Texans parade through here so I can get a look and obsess over whether we know each other or not. Bring ID, credentials of some sort, last known place of residence, aliases, shoe size, and preferred ice cream(s). Other items might be required, but for the moment, that’ll do. So…
Come on now! Let’s not make us impatient.
::: taps toes and gives suspicious glare :::
Where ARE y’all hiding? Huh? Because I just know you’re out there! Don’t make me come get ya.
One of my favorite stories. And the moment when I began to believe that all you people were real…
EveCon, 2001. Just before New Years.
I go with a pal. We’re in the big gaming room and setting up (I think) History of the World. We get several people to play, including a few people my pal knows.
My pal leaves to hit the bathroom. For a moment I’m alone at the table with one person I don’t know.
His nametag reads John Corrado.
“Um”, I say, “Do the letters S.D.M.B mean anything to you…”
This could be like a better version of You’ve Got Mail. Two people in the same office who are unknowingly sworn enemies in the Pit. I’m sure you can think of likely pairings.
Yup. I do the same thing. I am almost convinced that a couple of people that I know IRL post here but I’m not quite convinced enough to ask them here or IRL.
I’ve also often wondered if I’ve passed SC Dopers like Bruce_Daddy (who lives in the next town over) in the aisles of the local Walmart or something without having the slightest clue that’s who it is.
We need SDMB T-shirts to wear to identify ourselves.
I dunno if I’ve passed any of the 10+ BC dopers that are currently active, but Flamsterrete seems familar to me.
Perhaps we should have a question to test for people we think are dopers? Perhaps “Why do you drive in a parkway and park in a driveway?” and the answer would be “To find out what the third -gry word is.”
During our tornado alert thread this Spring, I realised I may have worked on a house near an Okie Doper. And someone has probably seen me, as I’m all over this city.
