No, the rabbis haven’t suddenly decided that pig is kosher. I’m talking about beef bacon, which is, well, the same cut of meat but from a cow. I think.
It’s been sitting around in the freezer for a while now, do to constant forgetting-to-make-it, but someone mentioned beef bacon is a CS thread, and that reminded me, and my mother and I actually got around to finally frying it. (Yes, that was a really long run-on sentence. Sorry).
It was delicious!
The only problem is that what seems like a huge package turns out to be a handful of crispy strips after all the fat melts away. And that from what I’ve heard, the bacon-cut is a heart attack on a plate. Eh, it’s too yummy to worry about health problems.
I always wondered what I was missing all these years. I’m glad I found it.
And you thought we were all just happy because Jesus had visited
Damn you, now I’ll have to try out this alternate bacon as well. Is there a sheep bacon? A lamb bacon? Bison bacon? Ilama bacon? Hippo Bacon? Elephant bacon? Rhino Bacon? Zebra bacon? Camel bacon? Turtle bacon? Manatee bacon? The mind reels at the possibilties!
PS. If you are at all frugal don’t measure your now cooked bacon and calculate what that bacon costs on a dollar per ounce basis
Plate bacon is good. I haven’t seen it around here, but it was available in the NY metro area. Of course while good, it does not compare to real bacon. But if you can’t eat that, it’s better than no bacon at all.
There is definitely lamb bacon; I’ve seen it for sale. Never tried it, but may do so now, and report back. Goose bacon is apparently very popular in Israel. I’ve heard that it’s greesy though.
The only alt bacon available around here is either vegan (Morningstar brand, which I think is owned by Adventists)- never tried that tho the burgers & sausage are OK, and turkey, which is good but it sure ain’t pork. I do imagine beef or some other cattle bacon would be great.
Can any gentiles who try it, tell us if it tastes like actual bacon, or is it some sort of new flavour ?
I don’t think that we can get it this side of the pond, but my curiousity has been piqued.
