Kylie and Doctor Who

The BBC has announced that Kylie Minogue is to have a “a major lead role” in this year’s Christmas special of Doctor Who. The show is to be called Voyage of the Damned. Story here.

The Doctor is also set to get an extra companion for the next series. Actress Freema Agyeman is to play Martha Jones in three episodes of spin-off show Torchwood, and will miss the first half of the 4th series. She will return to the series, though the new companion will be there for the whole 13-week run. Story here.

Not quite sure how to feel about this - on one hand, she’s Kylie Minogue. On the other hand, she’s done a song with Nick Cave and has a temendous cult following, so she obviously has the potential to be interesting. I just wonder how they’re going to address the issue that the Doctor quoted one of her songs in Season 2 and attributed it to her.

Hey, if they somehow work the Ninth Doctor into the Christmas Special the way I’m hoping and praying they will, they could put Paris Hilton in the damn thing and I’d still watch it. Eagerly.

If they’re doing a Torchwood spinoff, could Rose be involved again?

There’s already been one season of the Torchwood spinoff, set in the same universe that current Who is taking place in ie the Rose-free one, so it seems unlikely.

They’ve just announced the new companion will be Catherine Tate, returning to play Donna again.

Well that should shake things up in the Tardis. I approve. She was good in the otherwise ridiculous Christmas episode.

Oh no.

Oh, yes, unfortunately. It’s official.
I thought she was extremely annoying in the Christmas special and feared throughout the show that it was the introduction of the new companion. I haven’t seen her comedy show, so I dont know if she’s always that annoying, because if she is, it’s going to be hard to watch S.4.

Bring on Sally Sparrow.

On the plus side, if the new series uses the ageing theme as often as this last one did, she could turn into Nan.

“EX-TER-MIN-ATE”

“What a fucking liberty!”

It seems weird to me that Sally Sparrow and her story got such a positive reaction, and Catherine Tate and her story got a mediocre one, with cries of alarm at how annoying she can be, and yet this is the direction they choose to go.

I fear the worst.

Catherine Tate?? Now they’re taking fackin’ liberties. Load of ol’ shite.

It’s all about Sally Sparrow.

I presume they will moderate her character a bit. She’s not going to be in stroppy bride mode for the entire series. And it’ll be good to have a companion who doesn’t think the Doctor’s all that.

Sally Sparrow? Apart from the awful character name, I dunno, can’t really see her as a companion. A bit too pleased with herself? And another young, pretty girlie. She was great in Blink though.

Well, I assume the romance angle has been binned and that’s good.

And your point is…? :dubious:

The more young, pretty girlies the better IMO!

Oh they have to bring Jack back in S4 to meet Donna!

I have a feeling (and this is pure speculation so I’m not spoilering it) that Donna (Tate) will be killed off in a shocking fashion probably by the Daleks or The Master (in female form).

My reasoning is that Tate is a busy woman and filming takes 6+ months. Also, The Doctor has had a string of victories and he’s due a major loss (Adric style). So Donna will join travel in the TARDIS only long enough for people to get complacent and attached to the character and then she’ll be killed.

so long as she goes down uttering the immortal words

“Am I bovvered!?”

Sadly, no. She’s been contracted for a full 13 episodes whereas Freema Agyeman will do half a season.

I don’t care that Sally Sparrow is a girle, what I liked about her is that she was quick, smart and witty, didn’t break under stress, was assertive.
OTOH, it seemed as if Donna spent the whole Christmas special screaming.

Okay, then she’s dying in the S4 finale.

She did become more thoughtful towards the end of what was a really bad day for her. If they keep the character a bit more grounded, I think it’ll be good for the Doctor to have someone who will, frankly, slap a bit of sense into him.
