L5R cards - how to identify

I found a pile of old L5R cards, and I’m hoping someone can help me decide whether it’s worth looking for value, or if I should just give them away.

Are there any L5R cards that are still worth anything? Is there a reasonable buylist somewhere I should check?

How can I determine which set my cards are from. How about which cards are rare and which are chaff?

I’m not under any illusions that these cards are likely to be worth anything. But I don’t even know how to check. It looks like mine have the following copyright dates and set sizes (may not be an exhaustive list):

c. 2001, 156 cards
c. 2000-2001, 541 cards
c. 2001, no set size
c. 1996-2001, no set size.
c. 2002, 161 cards

I also notice that the small symbol between the card number and the set number is either a circle, a diamond, a star, or a circle with a star cut out. I’m guessing this is rarity?

Thanks!

It just so happens one of my buddies is a high level tournament player and part of the French test squad for new expansions. I’ll forward him your query, we’ll see how it goes.

Well that was fast. Here’s what he says:

"Not worth spit.

In short, old cards can only be played in the “open” format, which is hyper mega super underground.

Of course there are always collectors, but his cards aren’t old enough and in any case collectors are getting rare these days… So either he can find someone to give his cards to [for casual play], or he tosses them. Me, I toss 'em."

Thanks. That’s pretty much what I expected.
