LA Dopers - what's with "Crazy Gideon's"?

I get the west coast NBC feed and I was watching an old SNL from last night. There’s ad for an electronics store, “Crazy Gideon’s”.

There’s this screaming maniac (Gideon, I assume) letting me know what insane bargains he has in his store. The commercial ends with Gideon being dragged away in a straightjacket.

Have any LA Dopers shopped there? Are his prices insane? Or are the ads misleading - you get there and they are “sold out” of the advertised items?

Never shopped there, but I think it’s just the owner’s schtick.

I never shopped there either, but I loved the commercials.

Crazy Gideon’s is nothing. Just wait until you get those awful Sit & Sleep commercials:

“We’ll beat anyone’s advertised price or your mattress is FREEEEEE!!!”

You’re killing me, Larry!

Has Cal Worthington moved on to the great car lot in the sky? I haven’t seen him or his dog spot in awhile.

Crazy Gideon cracks me up. Sit’n’Sleep is just plain annoying.

I figured he was just putting on an act to get publicity, but is he actually offering any real bargains?

Saw his TV ads in the last few months up here (Northern California).

He’s still alive, but he might not be for much longer.

I used to like the Al - The Bedspread King commercials. Kevin & Bean used to get him on the radio (KROQ) for bizarre commentary.

Cal Worthington is 84 according to his IMDB listing.

There is much royalty in Southern California. Don’t forget Paul in La Habra. He’s the King of Big Screen TVs. And he ends each commercial with “I am the King!”

Is he anything like New York City’s Crazy Eddie?

I’ve seen Eddie’s commercials and, yes, they’re about the same.

I have to ask, am I the only one who wants to go to Jang & Associates?

You can see some clips – and outtakes – of Cal’s commercials (in which his “dog Spot” is variously played by a tiger, an elephant, a goat, etc.) here. There was a Doper whose screen name of PussyCow was inspired by her hearing of the “Go see Cal” refrain which is featured on the “best of Cal” compilation at the bottom of the linked page.

Crazy Gideon is awsome, unfortunatly his store isn’t half as cool as his comercial, I went to high school nearby and we would hang out, well not in the store, but in the general area with the occasional stop inside.

My absolute favorite local commercial is the toyota of orange radio ad. It has that perfect combination of having an annoyingly catchy jingle, and a hilariously obnoxious character.

“Oh you won’t get a lemon.”

“I WOULD HAVE GOT A LEMON!”

classic

Im from the South. Is this the type of commercial that is shown in “The Brave Little Toaster” ? (By the TV obviously)

Hehe. Brave Little Toaster roXx0rs. Yeah, the TV guy’s hastily thrown-together commercial is a dead-on parody of Crazy Gideons.

Is that the guy who ends the ads with “I am the king!”? Or am I mixing him up with the king of big screens?

This is great nostalgia, man.

I think BobT is correct that 'I am the King!* is Paul’s Big Screen TV.

Speaking of nostalgia, you know I grew up in San Diego.

See Pearson Ford, it stands alone
On Fairmont in El Cajon!
