Huh. I read the whole “You’ve got a lot of nerve, man”, waiting to see where 'Uigi! really lost it and freaked out and said and did really horrible things to you. And I just saw the predictable Pit back-and-forth crap that I see every day. I mean, sure he’s conservative, no big shock that he’s going to do the “love it or leave it” thing, and ruffle your feathers, but what else? Maybe I skimmed past the it - I really may have, so please could you copy and paste the really offensive parts? (I do admit, the thing about getting the “daughter laid” was pretty tacky, and rather rude - but after the description on this Pit Thread, frankly, I was expecting something much worse.)

I mean, I don’t get it. I’ve had (in my estimation) far more heated debates with people who I thought were way off the beam, and I never felt compelled to start a Pit thread about them. Well, there was that one time, when I asked someone to clarify a statement they’d made, and then a whole lot of us mutated it into a REALLY heated Pit Thread. (But it’s a long story…)

I seem to be noticing people just flippin’ out because someone disagrees (vehemently) with them. Shit - it just happened to me on the “He’s not allowed to be proud he’s straight” thread. I was having what I thought was a reasonable debate over something, and I was repeatedly told to “shut the hell up” by the person who is disagreeing with me.

What the hell is this? Can’t people just frickin’ disagree without telling each other to SHUT UP, or staring Pit threads to rant about the “big ol’ meanie” who disagreed with them? (The nerve!)

Forgive me, MarxBoy, if I missed the really heinous thing 'Uigi said. Because I admit, it’s quite possible I missed it.

See I thought the “Some Nerve” thread was really about the right to freely distribute information. The fact that the information in question was socialist didn’t seem to make much difference in the context of what I thought the point being made was. The thread was then hijacked into a socialism debate (with the approval of Marxboy i now see). I figured if we were going to rehash the economic theory debate, we might as well do it in the right forum.

At any rate, may I point out that you’ve incorrectly identified me as a “punk”; I can’t stand to listen to that stuff. Nor am I a troll; I’m clean shaven, have all my hair, cut a rather dashing figure for my age, and have all my teeth.

Further, may I correct you from another inaccuracy? I merely HAVE an asshole and HAVE a dick.

If your agenda is indoctrinating the masses on the benefits
of socialism, I’d suggest moving to Great Debates where learned scholars, such as yourself, can present their case in an atmosphere that provides wonderful give and take.

I wouldn’t feel too angry if it was just someone disagreeing with me, and being kind of an asshole about it.

It’s the fact that he rolls in here and immediately spews conservative cliches and random offensive statements. There’s a word for that, it’s called being a troll.

It’s not like I’ve been here forever, but you’ll notice that I sort of lurked for the first several months that I was a member, posting only a few times a week, getting a feel for the boards. These boards are not a place where people can come in and ignorantly and blatantly attempt to piss people off for the fun of it. People can be pissed at one another, and exchange views, but they should at least be slightly civil and intelligent about it.r

’Uigi, this is not a place where you will find too many people that like you, even if they agree with you. I didn’t participate in the straight pride thread, but I assume (a bad idea I know) that you contributed the same kind of shock-tactic I-have-a-small-penis statements.

Marxboy - granted, I don’t know 'Uigi that well, he hasn’t been here that long. But, perhaps he hasn’t POSTED here that long. For all you know, he may have lurked here a while before jumping in to participate. Or possibly been very active at simular boards and was quickly able to pick up the tone here. (I’ve done that at other boards more than once.)

I’d really benefit from some copy and paste quotes of his extreme assholishness, because I just don’t see anything that damning. Just having you tell me that you thought he was being an asshole is not getting me any closer to understanding what specifically he said that made him such an asshole. (So much so that he deserved his own Pit thread, and deserved to be driven away by the Teeming Millions.)

I may be way off, but I think the 'Uigi’s main transgression is his biting, sharp, oozing sarcasm. Now, I pride myself in being able to dish out some reasonably good sarcasm now and then, and I also pride myself in being able to recognize and appreciate it. And I’ve seen it artfully done on these boards, many a time. (It’s one of SDMB’s particular charms, I think!) I suspect 'Uigi has more than his share of skill in this area. And frankly, I think that some people (when they are in the middle of a Serious Debate about a Serious Isssue) would rather have someone tell them to felch a goat than to have the dreaded sarcasm used! Perhaps this is the reason you got so enraged? Granted, sarcasm has its place. It could be really tacky to use when someone is lamenting a lost loved one, or talking about the rare tropical disease they just developed. But your thread was nothing like that, and it WAS in the Pit, so I figure it’s fair game. Apparently 'Uigi felt so as well.

Now, 'Uigi may eventually prove himself to be a total asshole in the long run. I don’t know him, and I don’t have a crystal ball. And granted, if all he were ever to do on these boards is jump into threads and jot off little sarcastic gems - well that might wear thin after a while. It’ll just depend, I suppose. But unless he really goes overboard on something, I don’t see why he should be called an “asshole” and a “troll” and be driven away from these boards - merely because he disagrees with you (or anyone) in a bitingly sarcastic way.

  1. Please, let’s keep remarks in perspective; I’ll disagree with you on socialism until convinced otherwise. If you feel I’m being and “asshole”, I’d appreciate evidence that supports your accusation (I suppose I could level the same accusation at you with far more evidence).

  2. If conservative cliches offend you, I’d suggest you find another board to hang around; the pit is the pit, is the pit, is the pit. My statements are NOT random. Perhaps they’re designed to see if you really believe what you espouse. Or maybe (as another poster mentioned) they’re designed to drive your blood pressure through the roof.

  3. The last time I checked there are no requirements to “lurk-before-posting”. I suspect these boards would be quite boring if all posters were required to wait an “appropriate” length of time before their first post.

  4. I agree that posts to the boards (even the pit) should show a certain amount of civility and intelligence. I have no knowledge/won’t complain about your intelligence, just your civility.

  5. I have no set tactics; I doubt anyone does, but you should get used to it. Not everyone is in agreement with you (or me for that matter).

btw: gentlemen do not discuss “penis size”, either.

I agree. I was just saying that since a lot of the things we’re espousing have been laid down already, there’s no sense in re-inventing the wheel. I offered you a resource for reading up on what you were asking about, and suggested you take the initiative on your own proposal.

Seems to me, MarxBoy, that Uigi was acting not too much differently than you were in that thread. Reading both sides, without ever looking at that thread until now, perhaps you shouldn’t call the kettle names until you look at yourself? You weren’t exactly the most polite or reserved in the beginning of that thread to pretty much anyone who took a contrary view to your own.

Turbo Dog - you bring up a good point. Also, in MarxBoy’s OP on the thread in question, he calls the subject of his rant (the dad of a fellow student) a “big dumbass southern cock”.

Look at 'Uigi’s profile. He’s from The South. You probably didn’t win him over with that gratuitious remark.

Also note that 'Uigi comes from a military background. I just think it’s obvious he was not enchanted with your overall tone in the other thread.

What are you thinking?!? So you disagree with the guy —big deal! It’s not like you have to wake up to him every morning, or work for him, or foster his children. You don’t ever have to talk to him again! This is a message board, one of thousands, and you’ll find many people who disagree with you with less than conciliatory attitudes.

Inciting the mob to riot — that’s just wrong, man. It serves no purpose but to seek justification for your own outrage — which, in my opinion, is somewhat unnecessary. It’s too bad he hurt your feelings, but you perpetuating it by immediately chucking colloquialisms in his direction as retribution isn’t going to change his opinion of your sociopolitical mindset, nor will it paint a sympathetic picture of your own degree of maturity and intellectual foundation.

MarxBoy, I suggest you take things a little less personally if you’re going to be posting on this board, particularly in this forum. Mincing words is the exception, not the rule.

If you idly flip through the Pit, I will be quite stunned if you don’t find long term posters who use such colorful vernacular so as to make ’Uigi’s comments look like a Miss Manners Caveat to the Society of Virtues. I submit that any one of the denizens of this arena could (and have) conjure(d) up such a stream of razored vitriol so as to rekindle memories of the first audience reaction to Friedkin’s The Exorcist—and in the future, you might be on the receiving end.

Your consternation is not invalid, MarxBoy, but your ‘rallying’ of the SDMB, in my opinion, is a mistake which works against, not for, your case.
