No matter what arguments you muster in the defense of socialism, they chant the same things louder and faster so they won’t have to hear you and maybe think about the other side for a moment.
Flaming them just strokes their egos. Then they try to say you’re inconsiderate and impolite later on because they know you don’t respect them or their ideas. Oh, true, sometimes when they’re outside the ring and they have the facepaint off, they can be rather nice people, but they head for the makeup mirror and fire up the klieg lights under the Big Top when the subject of politics is breached again.
The circus won’t close down by force of argument or flaming. It’ll go under when people stop buying the tickets.
There are plenty of people out there in the real world (read: off the SDMB) who are interested in the ideas of socialism and who want to ask real questions about it. Work with them instead. It’s much better for your blood pressure.
We are all more or less anonymous on this board, Marxboy, so I wouldn’t be too thin-skinned about cheesy insults hurled by others, especially in a Pit thread.
As I am sure you are aware, there are plenty of Americans who confuse outrage over societal inequities with hatred of their country and thus become highly upset whenever someone questions how wonderful everything is (for them at least).
’Uigi has done nothing more than to state a banal, very tired cliche, and you can count yourself lucky if that’s the worst abuse you receive for your views.
Big deal, no one is paying much attention to him/her/it. Furthermore, you are showing a lot of crust by claiming authority to define who does and does not belong here. Let it slide and move on.
Not evryone who dislikes Socialism is necessarily rude. I am a staunch capitalist, but I like to think I can disagree in a polite and respectful manner.
And I agree that Uigi is a jive-ass punk who needs to be bitchslapped and sent home crying to his momma.
Olentzero, what about those of us who laugh at both socialism and libertarianism? Or do we have our own special circle of Hell?
The job of moderator is hell enough for the likes of you, my friend. You laugh at both of us? You get to pull us apart when we fight.

That’s not patronizing, that’s simply what happens to most people who were once hard-core Socialists, including myself.
While I admire the sincerity of your convictions, I do not see how Socialism can work in a world where people are flawed.
goboy, when I used to hang out with the International Socialists, most of the group was over forty, despite the fact that the meetings were held on the McGill University campus.
Yeah, I once thought I was gay, too. My experience proved to me I liked women better. So should I assume that all gays will go straight once they’ve had some heterosexual episodes? :rolleyes:
And as long as you’re lumping even my section of the political spectrum in there (and I keep repeating that I’m a Keynesian, not a socialist), I should point out that the vast majority of the members of NDP-Quebec that I’ve met are older people, many of whom date back to the CCF - Tommy Douglas era. My grandfather was a New Democrat until he died.

Olentzero, I’m not sure that political philosophies and sexual orientation are analogous items, so I don’t see the relevance of your example.
Because I like you guys and I don’t wish to get drawn into a venomous argument when I don’t wholly disagree with you, I will say I am absolutely, 100 percent wrong.
Which of course, requires me to point out, not all left-wingers are socialists. (I know, you know that…and even referenced it in your thread, but it’s still worth saying.)
As a side note, speaking of the ages of socialists, I run into a lot of old socialists (over 60) and a lot of young socialists (under 30), but not as many in between. Maybe it’s not an age thing, but a generational one, and baby boomers are less likely to be socialist?
At least, Johnny C., that particular circle of hell will be nicely populated with moderators. You, I, and manhattan would all be there. That is, if manny and I actually believed there was a hell of any kind.
While I have do have some libertarian leanings, I don’t espouse the near total dismantlement of the federal government as most of them do.

I myself have a rather intense dislike for socialism and at the first glance of the “You have some Nerve” thread I readied myself to hurl a few barbs at Socialists. But upon reading the thread I realized that I sided with Marxboy’s main point in that thread and while I still disagree with his economic philosophy, I defend his right to distribute information on it. Hell, if I have to put up with getting “You’re going to hell you Catholic heretic!” brochures, a little Socialist literature will lighten the reading a bit.
And then upon further introspection (there’s been a lot of this lately)I realized that my own knowledge of economic theory has become pretty rusty. My understanding of just what the current socialists on this board are advocating has become impaired. So, although I know it has been done before, it hasn’t been done with this current crop. I would greatly appreciate it if all you capitalist pigs and pinko commies tromped over to Great Debates and defined all these things again for me. Thanks.
Blackclaw - with all due respect, try the Search function with the keywords ‘communism’ and ‘socialism’ under “Any Date” and see what you can come up with. Probably a lot, but there should be at least two or three threads that have everything laid out.
Then, if you haven’t been answered to your own satisfaction, open up a thread in GD or GQ (depending on your question) and people will be along to answer it from there.
Just wanted to check in and vowe my undying support to Marxboy, straight from the People’s Republic of China.

Guys, I appreciate that you guys are interested in having Socialist debate, but I think that belongs in the “You Have A Lot of Fucking Nerve” Thread.
This thread is about my intense dislike of 'Uigi, not about my Socialist feelings. Please, let us continue to make 'Uigi feel as uncomfortable as possible here, and maybe convince him to move his dumb troll ass along.
