At the 2007 Burning Man I was asked by a young lady to administer a spanking.
After the first swat, which seemed to me to be a pretty good one, she said, rather distdainfully, “Harder than that.” After a couple more, diddly-durn good smacks, she started snorting and grunting. By the last one, the 6th, the grunts had taken a definate air of sexual pleasure. The audience had fallen silent.

I did some quick back-of-the-envelope work and although my impression was that it would be much higher, it did only come out to about 11% of my sample. I guess it just makes an impression on me when a woman indicates that she wants to be spanked.
Now, this is over the last 35 years, and I certainly haven’t noticed any trends in that time, to JSexton’s question.
The motivations vary, of course. For some it’s a pain thing, others a more complex humiliation/control/dom/sub experience. My recently ex girlfriend of five years, a very accomplished and self-confident 50-something pediatrician, took two years before she screwed up the courage to ask for it. She was so roundabout it took me a while to pick up the hints. But she liked it, yes she did.

In all my years of promiscuity, I’ve encountered one woman who liked to be spanked*. She sort of crawled across my lap and the most obvious sight of her was that of her peachy little bottom. I gave that bottom a few caresses and then a few light pats; she turned her head to see me and said, “You don’t spank hard enough.” So, I did spank hard enough to turn her bottom red.
